Martin Noth – författare

This collection appeared in the same year as von Rad's The Problem of the Hexateuch and has similarly been unavailable for many years. It contains the most important of Noth's articles including, in addition to the study named in the title, 'Jerusalem and the Israelite Tradition', 'God, King and Nation in the Old Testament', 'History and Word of God in the Old Testament', and 'The Understanding of History in Old Testament Apocalyptic'.

'This is a book to be reckoned with, largely concerned with tracing the sources underlying the text and searching for the origins and meanings of the various traditions which have coalesced in those sources. It is a book which needs reading with attention, as valuable to the scholar as to the student. It rarely looks beyond the world of the Old Testament, so providing no short cuts for those who read commentaries to get simple answers; but for those who wish to study the book of Numbers seriously it is essential reading' (Joseph Robinson in View Review). Rowley in The British Weekly). Until his death in 1968, Martin Noth was Professor of Old Testament in the University of Bonn.

Martin Noth''s study of the Chronicler''s History may not be so widely known as his celebrated Deuteronomistic History (published by JSOT Press in English translation in 1981). However, as Williamson argues in his introduction, written specially to accompany this translation, it was a most significant contribution to the study of Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah, and a translation of it has been long overdue. In view of the recent revival of interest in this body of literature, it is important that English-speaking readers should have first-hand access to one of the seminal studies in this field.

In this examination of Numbers, Martin Noth explores the community of the twelve tribes, the organization of the Levites, various divine ordinances, and other important themes in the book of Numbers. Also included is an appendix on daughters' rights of inheritance.The Old Testament Library provides fresh and authoritative treatments of important aspects of Old Testament study through commentaries and general surveys. Wenn von "neuen Quellen" die Rede ist, die für die Frage nach den Ursprüngen des alten Israel von Bedeutung sind, könnte man an verschiedene Textfunde aus der altorientalischen Welt denken. Bei Ausgrabungen, die zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen begonnen wurden, sind einige Text­ gruppen an das Licht gekommen, die in dieser oder jener Weise Beziehungen zur alttestamentlichen Überlieferung haben, so die Texte von Ugarit und Alalach im nördlichen Syrien und die Texte von Nuzu im Osttigrisland. Für historische Fragestellungen aber kommen in erster Linie die Texte von Mari (am mittleren Euphrat) in Betracht, da sie mehr und anscheinend unmittelbarer als die anderen Textgruppen auf den verschiedensten Gebieten Zusammenhänge mit der im Alten Testament überlieferten Geschichte des ältesten Israel aufweisen. Es werden daher in der vorliegenden Unter­ suchung speziell die Mari-Texte in das Auge gefaßt. Da deren Veröffent­ lichung noch im Gange ist, kann z. Z. nur der augenblickliche Stand unserer Kenntnisse festgehalten werden. Schon dabei erweist sich die Fülle der Beziehungen als sehr bemerkenswert. Es ist aber fast mit Sicherheit zu erwarten, daß sich mit dem Fortschreiten der Veröffentlichung dieser Texte weitere Beziehungen ergeben werden.
