La desigualdad en América Latina ha sido una constante histórica. Brechas en la distribución del ingreso; diferencias de acceso a bienes y servicios por etnia, condición laboral o social; crecientes divergencias económicas entre estratos, sectores o clases, han sido seculares en la región. Este libro trastoca las ideas de que esta desigualdad solo se registra en las remuneraciones de los hogares y que su ocurrencia se acota al último medio siglo. Autoridades en la historia económica y el desarrollo latinoamericanos restituyen el carácter diverso y duradero de la desigualdad con enfoques que consideran la inserción internacional, las políticas públicas, la evolución de ingresos y riqueza, la diversidad étnica, la pobreza y el crecimiento.
