Nach 1945 stand das Kirchenrecht in den evangelischen Landeskirchen im Osten Deutschlands vor erheblichen Herausforderungen. Beide Bezugsgrößen - Kirche und Recht - veränderten sich erheblich. Die evangelischen Kirchen mussten auf staatliche Repressalien und auf teilweise rapiden Mitgliederschwund reagieren. Der allgemeine Rechtsbegriff machte eine erhebliche Bedeutungsverschiebung durch; kennzeichnend ist der Übergang vom Rechtsstaatsprinzip zur "sozialistischen Gesetzlichkeit". Diese Entwicklungen konnten nicht ohne Rückwirkungen auf das Kirchenrecht bleiben.Die Kirchen in der DDR mussten außerdem auch auf die Mangel- und Diasporasituation reagieren. Dabei sammelten sie Erfahrungen, die auch für den gesamtdeutschen Protestantismus von Nutzen sein könnten.
