Although the distant origins of medieval Central Europe have enjoyed constant interest among historians, only marginal attention has been paid to the power and political prerequisites for the first Westernization, i.e. the gradual adoption of the values, norms and patterns of behavior of the Latin West by the communities (gentes) around the eastern edge of the Carolingian and subsequently Holy Roman Empires. Such a gap in knowledge, long overlooked, is now being filled by The Making of Medieval Central Europe: Power and Political Prerequisites for the First Westernization, 791-1122. While respecting the state of research and based on an original analysis of the sources, this book offers an informed reflection of a complex dialogue that was initiated after the collapse of the Avar Khaganate at the end of the 8th century and that, by the beginning of the 12th century, gave rise to a Central Europe that was Westernized (i.e. turned toward the West) yet in many ways distinctive. Another and no less important added value of this book is the author's conscious effort to overcome the narrow interpretive matrices defined by the national interests of the time.

Karel Hruza zählt zu den wenigen Historikern, die ungezwungen zwischen der Mediävistik und der Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts wechseln und sich von keiner Staatsgrenze Fesseln anlegen lassen. Sein Ansatz eines vorbehaltlosen Dialogs auf mitteleuropäischer Ebene inspirierte eine Reihe von Kollegen und Freunden, ihm zum 60. Geburtstag einen Sammelband mit von seinem Werk beeinflussten wissenschaftlichen Beiträgen zu widmen.

Die Narrative der Nationalgeschichten haben seit dem 19. Jahrhundert das Verständnis der mittelalterlichen Geschichte Ostmitteleuropas immer wieder anachronistischen Geschichtsbildern unterworfen, die die Interessen und Legitimationsbedürfnisse der Nationalstaaten auf das Mittelalter zurückprojizierten. Davon zu unterscheiden sind aber die aus Sicht der Zeitgenossen des 12. Jahrhunderts relevanten Kategorien, die die politischen Beziehungen zwischen Friedrich Barbarossa und den weltlichen und geistlichen Eliten Mittelosteuropas bestimmten. Dabei treten vor allem Bindungen rechtlicher, freundschaftlicher und verwandtschaftlicher Art in den Blick. Die Reflexe gelingender oder scheiternder Beziehungen in der böhmischen, deutschen, polnischen und ungarischen Historiographie des 12. Jahrhunderts lassen wiederum Rückschlüsse auf zeitgenössische Wertvorstellungen und autorenspezifische Sichtweise zu. Der Band versammelt Beiträge deutscher, polnischer, tschechischer und ungarischer Historiker, die 2017 in Brno/Brünn nach den Konsequenzen dieser Bindungen für die politische Gestalt Ostmitteleuropas im 12. Jahrhundert fragten.

Politisches Handeln erscheint uns heute als wesentlich durch Entscheidungen bestimmt. Auf das Mittelalter ist diese Vorstellung jedoch nur begrenzt übertragbar, denn anders als in der modernen Gesellschaft war in der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft die strenge Rangordnung eine wesentliche Rahmenbedingung des Entscheidens. Der Rang markierte die soziale Identität des Einzelnen. Eine Entscheidung des Herrschers war eine konfliktträchtige Angelegenheit, wenn sie an den Rang geknüpfte Ansprüche bedrohte und deshalb als Ehrverletzung empfunden wurde. Wegen solcher potentiell destabilisierender Folgen bestand Herrschaftsausübung oft genug darin, Entscheidungen zu vermeiden und in der Schwebe zu halten. Der vorliegende Band versammelt Beiträge deutscher, polnischer, tschechischer und ungarischer Historiker, die 2023 in Brno/Brünn verschiedene Facetten herrscherlichen Entscheidens thematisierten.

This book offer a biography of a key East Central European ruler, Vladislaus Henry, who ruled the Margraviate of Moravia from 1198 to 1222 and, in cooperation with his brother, King Přemysl Otakar I of Bohemia, was involved in the transformation of the Holy Roman Empire into a free union of Princes. The study also describes the successful modernisation of Moravia and Bohemia during the 13th century, and reflects on the beginnings of the politically emancipated community of the Moravians, which was defined by land values. The work thus draws attention to a previously overlooked dimension of the European Middle Ages, including the history of not only states and nations but also of lands.
