The book of Judges presents Israel’s frailty, the nation’s need for deliverance, and God’s use of flawed leaders to guide his chosen people through a dark period of their history. The book of Ruth tells a smaller story within this narrative, showing God quietly at work in the lives of a few individuals. Mary Evans’s commentary places each book in its historical and canonical context, examines key theological themes and addresses issues facing twenty-first-century readers.Part of the Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries series designed to help the reader of the Bible understand what the text says and what it means.

Identifying three streams of concern in the books of Samuel (politics, people, and preaching), Mary Evans demonstrates how each of these manifests itself in the underlying and unifying theme of power-and powerlessness. She then uses this concept of power as a fascinating matrix for interpreting the events God ordains and the characters God uses in biblical history. Evans defends her case for the unity of the books that we divide into 1 and 2 Samuel with a sensitivity to the composition of the text and the intentionality of the various "writers" who had a hand in bringing the different accounts together. The discussion interacts with the parallel material in Chronicles and Kings and recognizes the importance of the themes of covenant and law, especially from the Deuteronomic perspective. The commentary, with its additional notes, also includes a good breadth of references to scholarly debate and discussion on various issues. Evans brings the often theologically difficult text of Samuel and the complex characters of Samuel, Saul, David, and others into sharp focus for the contemporary reader while offering fresh insights and perspectives on the ancient text.

The Old Testament prophets were people who looked at the world and heard God speaking. They looked at the creation and felt God's power. They looked at pain and poverty and felt God's compassion. They looked at oppression, corruption and idolatry and felt God's anger. They looked at faithful believers and felt God's encouragement. They looked to the future and envisaged God's action. They knew doubt, discouragement and rejection but they stood firm because in looking at God's world they had sensed God's love. They were real people speaking into real situations in a world where people's behavior and reactions were, in spite of all the advances of modern technology, not so very different from our own. Mary Evans, who lectured in Old Testament Studies for many years, firmly believes that these people who spoke from God so many years ago are dynamically relevant in church and society today. This book helps you understand the prophets and appreciate their relevance.
