Actualmente, en la psicoterapia persiste la dicotomia entre los partidarios de las terapias a largo plazo con los que proponen tratamientos breves. Existe la idea de que el cambio terapéutico exige necesariamente mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, esto a veces no resulta efectivo, como tampoco aplicar terapias breves para las patologías más invalidantes y persistentes.Este libro propone una modalidad terapéutica que va más allá de estos dos planteamientos para tratar a las llamadas "psicopatologías mayores". Primero se desarrolla una intervención terapéutica breve para invalidar la sintomatología rápidamente; el cambio ocurre de inmediato, pero la adquisición de estabilidad psíquica requiere un arco terapéutico más amplio. Por eso, se debe aplicar un trabajo posterior de más largo plazo para enseñar el modo de apoyar y guiar al sujeto a establecer un equilibro psicológico y conductual estable.A través de una narración apoyada en diálogos terapéuticos de seis casos clínicos representativos, el lector podrá entrar en el proceso de la psicoterapia breve a largo plazo y comprender cómo el cambio terapéutico puede producirse incluso en pacientes aparentemente intratables.
