Early Medieval Britain was more Roman than we think. The Roman Empire left vast infrastructural resources on the island. These resources lay buried not only in dirt and soil, but also in texts, laws, chronicles, charters, even churches and landscapes. This book uncovers them and shows how they shaped Early Medieval Britain. Infrastructures, material and symbolic, can work in ways that are not immediately obvious and exert an influence long after their creators have gone. Infrastructure can also rest dormant and be reactivated with a changed function, role and appearance. This is not a simple story of continuity and discontinuity: It is a story of adaptation and transformation, of how the Roman infrastructural past was used and re-used, and also how it influenced the later societies of Britain.

This Element will reevaluate the relationship between monasticism and the city in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages in the period 400 to 700 in both post-Roman West and the eastern Mediterranean, putting both of those areas in conversation. Building on recent scholarship on the nature of late antique urbanism, the authors can observe that the links between late antique Christian thought and the late and post-Roman urban space were far more relevant to the everyday practice of monasticism than previously thought. By comparing Latin, Greek and Syriac sources from a broad geographical area, the authors gain a birds' eye view on the enduring importance of urbanism in a late and post-Roman monastic world.

This is a community translation of the earliest English epic poem. Beowulf tells the story of a mythical hero in northern Europe in, perhaps, the sixth century. Alongside his story, multiple other shorter narratives are told and many other voices are heard, making it a rich and varied account of the poet’s views of heroism, conflict, loyalty, and the human condition.The poem is widely taught in schools and universities, and has been adapted, modernized, and translated dozens of times, but this is the first large-scale polyvocal translation.Readers will encounter the voices of over two hundred individuals, woven together into a reading experience that is at once productively dissonant, yet strangely coherent in its extreme variation. We hope that it turns the common question "Why do we need yet another translation?" on its head, asking instead, "How can we hear from more translators?," and "How can previously unheard, or marginalized voices, find space, like this, in the world of Old English Studies?" With this in mind we invite a new generation of readers to try their own hand at translating Beowulf in the workbook space provided opposite this community translation.It is often through the effort of translating that we see the reality of the original.This book is available as Open Access.

Essays in Long Late Antiquity (ELLA) is a newly-created Open Access, peer-reviewed journal positioned in the field of first millennium studies, a research framework that has gained momentum in recent years. The journal moves away from a Western European periodization of late antiquity in order to entice interdisciplinary and superregional approaches. Therefore, the journal is open to submissions dealing with circa the second to the ninth centuries (ca. 100 – 800 CE) and the broader Afro-Eurasian region, taking a stand against disciplinary siloing and recognizing increasing interconnectivity in this period. Submissions dealing with individual periods and places within this wider geographic and temporal scope are also welcome.ELLA acts as a place of publication for those in history, archaeology, art history, religious studies, and philology. It fosters exchange between researchers often separated by disciplinary boundaries, offering them the chance to publish shorter essays and translations of late antique sources alongside traditional journal articles.
