This is the time of year we must sink down: into the ancient story of God''s people and remember what it means to hope. We walk with them on the desert road. We ache and thrill with the Prophets. We sing along with the Poets. We wait with anticipation for Jesus to step into the Story. We could never get to him. Our only hope is that he comes to us. And in the fullness of time, the plot takes a scandalous turn that we dared not even imagine. The Creator steps into the Story, and takes on the lead role. The Author becomes the Protagonist.

Advent is the turn of the Story. It is a season in the Christian calendar that awakens our kingdom imagination as we intentionally enter into a time of waiting, longing for the arrival of Jesus at Christmas.

The journey from dissatisfied to devoted is marked by transformation. The scandalous grace of Jesus changes our legal standing before God’s judgment seat. But it changes more than that. It goes on from glory to glory, cultivating renewal in our hearts, minds, souls, and lives in every conceivable way as we are made new through him. The heart turned inward on itself is reoriented and redirected outward

Many of us feel this stirring. A desire to see the Holy Spirit unleash a river of awakening, flowing through the streets of our cities and communities and neighborhoods. We are waiting for the great wave. But perhaps we lack the faith to dream smaller.

As we sow for, pray for, and long for awakening, we are not watching for one grand moment. We are not watching for a landmark sermon or a revival meeting. Instead, we band together in groups of three to five disciples with the long view in mind. We read together, pray together, and meet together as small acts of courage and belief. We surrender to Jesus as he transforms us from dissatisfied to devoted. We build micro-communities of holy love, drawn into the depths by the Holy Spirit. As we go deeper, the ripples of hope go wider, crossing over each other to become a rising kingdom tide. Perhaps this is what awakening will look like.
