Mit der Aufmerksamkeit, die das Thema Religion in der Öffentlichkeit seit einigen Jahren erfährt, kann auch die Religionssoziologie einen neuen Aufschwung verzeichnen. Das modernisierungs- und säkularisierungstheoretische Fundament der Teildisziplin ist angesichts von Entwicklungen innerhalb und außerhalb westlicher Gesellschaften zunehmend in Frage gestellt worden. Dieser Band gibt einen Überblick über aktuelle Trends der Religionssoziologie. Neben der grundlegenden Erörterung handlungs-, organisations- und gesellschaftstheoretischer Fragen des religiösen Wandels in modernen Gesellschaften befassen sich die Beiträge in historischer und empirischer Perspektive mit Entwicklungsdynamiken individueller Religiosität, mit Sozialformen des Religiösen und mit dem Verhältnis der Religion zu anderen gesellschaftlichen Ordnungen. Dabei wird der religiöse Wandel im deutschen und europäischen Kontext explizit mit nordamerikanischen und nicht-westlichen Situationen konfrontiert. Insgesamt bietetder Band einen breiten Querschnitt aktueller religionssoziologischer Forschung, der gleichzeitig auch Diskussionen in den verwandten speziellen Soziologien und angrenzenden Disziplinen berücksichtigt.

Unter der Fragestellung "Wie weiter mit …?" werden die Werke von acht der wichtigsten Geistes- und Gesellschaftswissenschaftler des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts neu und wieder gelesen. Können, sollen oder müssen wir deren Blick auf soziale Fragen und Probleme heute noch teilen?Émile Durkheims zentrale Frage nach dem "lien social", dem Band, das die moderne Gesellschaft zusammenhält, könnte angesichts von Globalisierung und Multikulturalität nicht aktueller sein. Zwar gilt seine Konzeption einer Moralwissenschaft, die den Normwandel arbeitsteiliger Gesellschaften soziologisch erklärt und pädagogisch begleitet, als gescheitert. Jedoch ist gerade sein religionssoziologisches Spätwerk auch heute noch von großer Bedeutung, denn es erlaubt, Solidarität als Produkt alltäglicher Interaktionsrituale zu erklären. In seinen Ausführungen über die Bedingungen der Herausbildung europäischer oder globaler Solidaritätsformen erscheint der Begründer der französischen Soziologie als Weltgesellschaftstheoretiker avant la lettre.
