How do you reconcile imperial power with the nation-state? This study explores the enduring legacy of German colonialism, tracing the imperial origins of the German nation-state as it emerged in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Following unification under Prussian leadership, Germany expanded overseas to assert its place among the global powers. The resulting colonial empire left lasting imprints not only on local communities in Africa, the Pacific, and China but also on the German metropole itself. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources from European and African archives, Matthias Leanza demonstrates how the challenges of colonial governance prompted domestic reforms that reshaped the political arena, strengthened federal authority over the states, and sharpened national identity. While Germany's overseas ambitions ended abruptly with the First World War, the legacy of empire endured, embedded within the structures of the nation-state.

Der zweite Band der Reihe Glück und Erfolg im 20. Jahrhundert befasst sich mit den Schattenseiten jener Erfolgs- und Glücksimperative, die ein zentrales Movens individueller Lebensgestaltung wie auch kollektiver Vergesellschaftung in der Moderne bezeichnen. Die Autorinnen und Autoren des Bandes setzen sich mit einer Reihe von glücks- und erfolgsbezogenen Pathologien auseinander, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts für weite Teile der bürgerlichen Mittelschichten in Europa und den USA zu elementaren historischen Erfahrungen wurden, wobei vielfach gilt, dass Glück und Erfolg zugleich als Problem wie auch als Lösung individueller und kollektiver Konflikte konzipiert wurden.Stress und Unbehagen. Glücks- und Erfolgspathologien in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts untersucht, in welcher Weise das Umschlagen von Idealen in Zwänge, von Ansprüchen in Forderungen eine Deformation von Glücks- und Erfolgsidealen bewirkte, die sich u.a. in Massenphänomenen wie Depression oder Burnout manifestieren. Hierbei ist bewusst ein interdisziplinärer Zugriff gewählt worden, der soziologische, historische, literatur-, kunst- und medienwissenschaftliche Annäherungen zusammenführt. Methodologisch werden diskursgeschichtliche Zugänge mit einer praxeologischen Herangehensweise kombiniert, um neben performativen Logiken und Subjektivierungsweisen auch den wissensgeschichtlichen Horizont sichtbar zu machen, vor dem ''Glück'' und ''Erfolg'' im 20. Jahrhundert wirksam werden konnten.
