The textual findings of Qumran and the Codex Aleppo mark two turning points in the textual history of the Hebrew Bible. The textual history of this collection of Jewish writings is at the centre of the scientific life of Emanuel Tov, whom the University honored with an international symposium discussing his theses on the occasion of his 65th birthday Emanuel Tov's textual history research and one of his own works on the subject. In their long history, Jews encountered political, social, cultural, and religious crises which threatened not only their very existence but Jewish identity as well. Examples for such crises include the Babylonian Exile, the so-called Hellenistic Religious reforms, the first and second Jewish war, the inquisition, and the Shoah, but also the encounter of modernity or socio-economic developments. Political, cultural, and religious crises did not coin Jewish culture, thought, and religion but forced Jews from the very beginnings of Judaism until today to rethink and shape their Jewish identity anew. This volume asks how Jews coped with events that threatened Jewish existence, culture, and religion and how they responded to them. Each crisis was different in nature and evoked hence different developments in Jewish culture, thought, and religion.

Jewish literature from the Second Temple period is characterized by extensive use of authoritative writings. The Qumran text finds have made this characteristic of ancient Jewish literature particularly clear. Until now, science had to rely on the textual knowledge of the researchers to identify such quotations and allusions. It has recently become possible to identify them using electronic databases. Using the new technology, this publication is the first to compile comprehensive lists of citations and allusions to the books of the Hebrew Bible in Jewish literature from the Second Temple period. Many of the quotations and allusions mentioned here were identified for the first time. The lists presented here are an indispensable aid for everyone who works on ancient Judaism in general or on the interpretation and text history of the Hebrew Bible in particular. The quotes and allusions are arranged on the one hand according to the book, chapter and sequence of the Hebrew Bible and on the other hand according to the sequence of the quoting and alluding texts.

Die jüdische Literatur aus der Zeit des Zweiten Tempels zeichnet sich durch extensiven Gebrauch autoritativer Schriften aus. Die Textfunde von Qumran haben dieses Charakteristikum antik-jüdischer Literatur besonders deutlich gemacht. Bislang war die Wissenschaft zur Identifikation solcher Zitate und Anspielungen auf die Textkenntnis der Forschenden angewiesen. Seit kurzem ist ihre Identifikation mit Hilfe elektronischer Datenbanken möglich geworden. Unter Rückgriff auf die neue Technologie stellt diese Publikation erstmals umfassende Listen der Zitate von und Anspielungen auf die Bücher der Hebräischen Bibel in der jüdischen Literatur aus der Zeit des Zweiten Tempels zusammen. Viele der hier genannten Zitate und Anspielungen wurden erstmalig identifiziert. Die hier vorgelegten Listen sind ein unverzichtbares Hilfsmittel für alle, die zum antiken Judentum im Allgemeinen oder zur Auslegungs- und Textgeschichte der Hebräischen Bibel im Besonderen arbeiten. Die Zitate und Anspielungen werden zum einen nach der Buch-, Kapitel- und Versfolge der Hebräischen Bibel angeordnet und zum anderen nach der Sequenz der zitierenden und anspielenden Texte.
