This is Volume V of twenty-two of a collection on 20th Century Philosophy. Originally published in 1964, this collection contains original papers assembled and representative in their styles, methods, and preoccupations. The various problems here discussed where to the author both important and unsolved: if others are stimulated to make further progress in solving them, the main purpose of this collection will have been achieved.

Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is an unquestioned philosophical masterpiece. It is a work of extreme compression. Within a compass of twenty thousand words, and in cryptic and elliptical sentences, Wittgenstein writes of the nature of the universe, the essence of language, the foundations of logic and mathematics, theories of probability, philosophical method, and the work of Bertrand Russell and Gottlob Frege. Finding it difficult, if not distasteful, to force philosophical thoughts and insights into a linear deductive order, Wittgenstein also makes scattered comments about the philosophy of science, ethics, religion, and mysticism. In A Companion to Wittgenstein’s "Tractatus," the distinguished philosopher Max Black provides students with a collocation of scattered passages and a close commentary on the text. This brilliant book allows readers to fully apprehend the value of Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus as both a unique text and as the foundation for much subsequent work in philosophy.

I have tried to make this book an argument, not a catalogue of dogmas. Its ideal reader will find himself constantly asking questions, for which he will insist on finding his own answers. To avoid wasting his time, I have made the fullest use of authentic illustrations from newspapers, books, and other contemporary sources. One of the wisest things ever said about our subject is that “Logic, like whiskey, loses its beneficial effect when taken in too large doses.” While bearing this constantly in mind, I have also aimed at a high level of accuracy and the inclusion of nothing that would have to be unlearnt at a more advanced level of study. This book could never have been written without the help of the students to whom I have lectured on logic and scientific method. My chief obligations are to them.Logic ought to be easy, interesting, and enjoyable. This book will have been successful if it helps some readers to find it so.—Prof. Max Black
