Although Antiquity itself has been intensively researched, together with its reception, to date this has largely happened in a compartmentalized fashion. This series presents for the first time an interdisciplinary contextualization of the productive acquisitions and transformations of the arts and sciences of Antiquity in the slow process of the European societies constructing a scientific system and their own cultural identity, a process which started in the Middle Ages and has continued up to the Modern Age.The series is a product of work in the Collaborative Research Centre “Transformations of Antiquity” and the “August Boeckh Centre of Antiquity” at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Their individual projects examine transformational processes on three levels in particular ‒ the constitutive function of Antiquity in the formation of the European knowledge society, the role of Antiquity in the genesis of modern cultural identities and self-constructions, and the forms of reception in art, literature, translation and media.

Philologus, one of the oldest and most respected periodicals in the field of Classics, is conceived as a forum for discussion among different methodological approaches to the study of ancient texts and their reception. It publishes original scholarly contributions with a strong international focus. Publications languages are: German, English, Italian, French. The accompanying series Philologus. Supplemente / Philologus. Supplementary Volumes, starting in 2015, publishes monographs and collections of papers pertaining to all aspects of the study of ancient literature and its reception, with a special focus on interdisciplinary approaches, combining Classics with Literary and Cultural Studies. Seit seiner Genese vor mehr als 2000 Jahren gehört das vielfältige Werk Ovids zu den einflussreichsten der europäischen Literatur. Das vorliegende Handbuch will einen ebenso sachlich-informierenden wie theoretisch-orientierenden Einblick in das Œuvre Ovids, die Wege seiner Erforschung und seine vielfältige Rezeption geben. In essayartigen Beiträgen zu den Kontexten und Voraussetzungen, den Themen und Konzepten  der von Ovid verfassten Literatur und der in ihr aufgeworfenen Fragen sollen interessierte Laien ebenso Antworten finden wie Ovid-Experten neue Anregungen beziehen können. Im Zentrum steht die Arbeit am Text; es werden exemplarische, problemorientierte Analysen geboten, um Ovids literarische Ästhetik, seine Erzähltechniken und ihre Kontexte zu veranschaulichen. Im Mittelpunkt steht in allen Beiträgen nicht nur die Frage nach der Bedeutung Ovids für die europäische und außereuropäische Kultur; auch seine Modernität als Autor wird aus verschiedenen Perspektiven betrachtet.
