This book explores the dynamics of the "middle-class global rebellion" born of the frustration at declining living standards. Addressing narratives constructed by different social and political agents and groups, it examines contexts of social crisis in Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, understanding the middle classes as a set of complex and conflicting political relationships. With attention to the manner in which people create "situated habits", consolidating new expectations and desires through a concrete biography, it analyzes continuities and changes in classed self-perceptions based on performative use. With new perspectives, including historical and intersectional approaches, Middle Class Identities and Social Crisis transcends disciplinary boundaries to explore the hybridity of research methods and techniques and challenge established analytical frameworks. In Indians, Blacks, and Morochos Menara Guizardi and Silvina Merenson address the relationships between stratification and social mobility in contemporary Argentina, using an ethnographic study on class relations in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Relying on the Extended Case Method, the authors narrate the life history of Ramiro. A worker who has lived in the neighborhood for forty years, Ramiro strives to carve out a career through a network of micro and macro social relationships and conflicts that frame his daily life. Synthesizing the debates on class internationally and in Argentina, Guizardi and Merenson establish the study's initial theoretical frameworks and describe the methodology used. They then reconstruct Ramiro's life starting from his experiences in his home province of Tucuman, his migration to Buenos Aires, his settling in San Telmo and entering the work force, and the class conflicts that he experienced. The authors conclude by presenting a tentative anthropological conceptualization of class.

This book analyzes the experiences of women living and working across the busiest and most transited frontier in South America, the Paraná Tri-Border Area (TBA), between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. From a feminist approach, it shows how, in these territories, the gender violence is intensified, configuring an expression of ultra-intensity patriarchy. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted for two years along with Paraguayan women living and working between Ciudad del Este (Paraguay), and Foz de Iguazú (Brazil), the authors analyze, on the one hand, the intricate connection between gender violence and ethnicity on these borders; and, on the other hand, the persistence of a female care that appears to offer a fundamental tool of resistance, of vital female drive.The work is divided into three parts. The first is intended to read like a trip to this complex and fascinating corner of South America through a visual and ethnohistoric journey of the region, as well asa theoretical debate that defines gender violence and its particular condensation on border territories. The second part explores the women’s stories in-depth and follow the narrative thread of their biographies, rebuilding their experiences from their families of origin to their productive insertion on the TBA. This book is the first of a series of five volumes that analyze and denounce the gender inequalities and violence faced by Latin American female social scientists in academic settings. The five volumes will present and discuss the results of an ethnographic research project conducted in four countries – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico – to analyze gender inequalities experienced by Latin American women in five dimensions of academic life: undergraduate education, graduate education, labor insertion, professional performance in stable positions, and gender violence faced at work.This first volume narrates the creation of the research project, from the formulation of its methodological strategy to the application and analysis of its first case study in Chile. It presents the theoretical-methodological perspective adopted in the whole project – a feminist ethnography that draws on the intersubjective role of female experiences to denounce situations of power inequality – and analyses the testimonies of 50 female academics working in 12 universities in nine cities of Chile.The title of the five-volume set, How to Suppress the Careers of Female Social Scientists, pays homage to the seminal work of Joanna Russ about gender inequalities faced by female writers, How to Suppress Women’s Writing, and this first volume is both a "manual" and an "anti-manual". On the one hand, the first two parts of the book serve as a "manual" that situates the Chilean case, clarifies the methodological construction of the research project and discusses the limitations and possibilities of feminist methodologies in the social sciences. On the other hand, the third and fourth parts of the book are ironically presented as an “anti-manual” that explain how the careers of female social scientists are destroyed by intersectional gender-based inequalities and violence, even in social contexts that are open to equity policies.
