Este libro es el resultado de la amistad y colaboración profesional de más de dos décadas entre Georgina (Gina) Maldonado, educadora quechua y traductora lingüística del Cusco, y Michael Hill, antropólogo cultural estadounidense y profesor universitario en la ciudad de Quito. Basado en la metodología de historia de vida y en los estudios de migración y de identidades culturales y etno-raciales en los Andes, el libro aborda la historia de movilidad social y geográfica de una mujer quechua profesional, intelectual, transnacional e intercultural, una realidad cada vez más común en las sociedades andinas pero frecuentemente no visible en los imaginarios sociales sobre mujeres de origen quechua y quichua. Representando a una identidad quechua-mestiza y a la vez indígena profesional, la vida de Gina nos demuestra cómo las lógicas andinas de movilidad social eran imprescindibles en la construcción de oportunidades cosmopolitas y transnacionales. Dentro de estos contextos de movilidad, las identidades intelectuales, pedagógicas y activistas de Gina han sido forjadas, desafiadas y a veces fracturadas, atravesadas por relaciones y jerarquías de poder con respecto a intersecciones de raza y etnia, lengua, clase y género, y también atravesadas por los movimientos de resistencia hacia estas formas de injusticia. El libro sigue y desarrolla la tendencia en la antropología de historias de vida hacia textos dialógicos y colaborativos, el desarrollo de antropologías latinoamericanas orientadas hacia la interculturalidad y la decolonialidad en vez del indigenismo, y el surgimiento de generaciones de artistas e intelectuales indígenas expresando y teorizando sus propias identidades y realidades. El formato y estilo del libro se caracteriza por un entretejido de diálogo entre las narraciones de Gina y el análisis y contextualización sociocultural de las mismas por Michael. Abordando temas como narrativa etnográfica y representación, movilidad y exclusión etno-racial y filosofías y prácticas activistas, el diálogo entre los autores envuelve los elementos y propósitos de la vida de Gina y de tantas otras mujeres de la región andina: de superar la exclusión social, de valorar los raíces culturales, de lograr la movilidad social y de devolver y ser pionera para nuevas generaciones cada vez más interculturales.
