The commentary of Thomas Aquinas on the Gospel of John is a masterpiece of Christian exegesis. According to Otto Hermann Pesch, who translated and edited several volumes of the German edition of Thomas Aquinas, this commentary immediately preceded his development of Christology in the Summa Theologiae and represents Thomas at the pinnacle of his exegetic skills. His take on the Gospel begins with a systematic ordering of what the Evangelist intended and how he went about realising it. Based on this framework he then provides the various interpretations, for example, factual-historical ones concerning aspects of the Jewish religion and everyday life, the topography of the Holy Land, the meaning of certain names of towns and persons or the chronology of the events in the life of Christ. Thomas always attempts to find explanations for the differences present in the other Gospels. Further, especially in the first 11 lectiones, he refers to Aristotle and many questions with philosophical implications (for example, of the meaning of the term "word" - logos). Next, Thomas relates the verse from the Gospel in question to other Biblical and non-Biblical texts. He also devotes much effort to the disputes going on with the heresies, which he attempts to refute by showing the contradiction in their arguments with the Bible.

Der Kommentar von Thomas von Aquin zum Johannes-Evangelium ist ein Meisterwerk christlich-katholischer Exegese. Nach Prof. Otto Hermann Pesch (der mehrere Bände der deutschen Thomas-Ausgabe übersetzt hat) geht der Kommentar unmittelbar der Ausarbeitung der Christologie in der Summa Theologica voraus und zeigt Thomas auf der Höhe seines exegetischen Könnens. Die Erschließung der Evangelienstellen beginnt jeweils damit, dass in einer systematischen Gliederung herausgearbeitet wird, was der Evangelist beabsichtigte und wie er vorging, um es zu erreichen. Auf der Grundlage dieses Gerüsts werden dann die verschiedenartigsten Erklärungen gegeben, zum Beispiel sachlich-historische, betreffend etwa Gegebenheiten der jüdischen Religion und des Alltagslebens, die Topographie des Heiligen Landes, die Bedeutung von Orts- und Personennamen oder die Chronologie der Ereignisse im Leben Christi, wobei auch versucht wird, Erklärungen zu finden für die Unterschiede der Darstellung zwischen den Evangelisten. Ferner werden, vor allem in den ersten elf Lectiones und oft im Rückgriff auf Aristoteles, Fragen mit philosophischen Implikationen erörtert, etwa zum Begriff des Wortes (Logos, Inneres Wort). Im Zusammenhang damit nehmen auch theologische Überlegungen zur Dreifaltigkeit einen breiten Raum ein. In einem nächsten Schritt wird die jeweils besprochene Evangelienstelle in Beziehung gesetzt zu anderen Texten biblischen und außerbiblischen Ursprungs, etwa zu Kommentaren aus der Zeit der Patristik, wobei hauptsächlich Augustinus, Chrysostomus und Origenes herangezogen werden. Die biblischen Texte stammen aus 31 Büchern des Alten und 20 des Neuen Testaments. Ein weiterer Punkt, dem Thomas von Aquin große Aufmerksamkeit widmet, ist die Auseinandersetzung mit Häresien, die er meistens durch den Nachweis eines Widerspruchs zu entkräften unternimmt, in dem sie zur Heiligen Schrift selber stehen.
