In this innovative book, master clinician Michael Garrett shows how to weave together cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy to support the recovery of persons suffering from psychosis. This integrated framework builds on the strengths of both methods to achieve lasting gains, even for patients with severe, chronic mental illness. The therapist is guided to use CBT to help the patient recognize the literal falsity of delusions, while employing psychodynamic strategies to explore the figurative truth and personal meaning of psychotic symptoms. Extended case presentations and numerous clinical vignettes illustrate Garrett’s compassionate, empowering approach.Winner (Second Place)--American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award, Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Category

Few populations around the world have been as deeply affected by outside cultures as Native Americans. The wide variety of people who lived in America prior to Western migration possessed an equally wide variety of faith practices and beliefs. This book is about how those beliefs began, how they changed due to the influence of outside forces, and how Native Americans today are working to preserve their faiths. Tied deeply to the land and to nature, Native American faiths share some common traits. Native American Faith in America explores these basic beliefs, the ""coming of the long knives,"" and the impact of Western expansion, along with the ways that Native Americans and their faiths were deeply changed by this new civilization on their land. As the years have passed, many Native American ways have come into the general culture, influencing everything from fashion and music to medicine and sports. The dominant American culture continues to affect the social lives of Native Americans, both on reservations and elsewhere, while the sacred sites of some tribes have been the source of great controversy. In the political world, Native Americans have been very active, and most of this political work, from the American Indian Movement to today's reservation casinos, is based in faith and belief. Finally, the book focuses on how Native Americans young and old are working to ensure that their faiths and beliefs do not die out as some of their languages and customs have.

Two hearts anchored in faith. Two perspectives shaped by pain. One God who sees the truth. Elise Farmington's world is already unraveling when a devastating car crash leaves her trapped in a blinding snowstorm—injured, alone, and slipping toward the edge of life. In the silence of the storm, she whispers a desperate prayer . . . and wonders if anyone is listening. Then, against all odds, someone comes.David Stetson emerges from the white darkness—calm, steady, and unwavering in his belief that God led him there. With quiet strength, he pulls Elise from the wreckage and carries her to shelter, convinced he is simply walking in obedience to the Lord's call. But when Elise awakens in a place she doesn't recognize, fear takes hold. Though David speaks gently of faith and purpose, something in her spirit feels unsettled. Is he truly her rescuer . . . or is she no longer free?David insists God's hand is in all of it.Elise isn't so sure.As tension rises between them, a far greater danger begins to close in—one that threatens not only their safety, but their trust in everything they believe. To survive, Elise and David must confront their deepest fears, surrender their need for control, and learn what it truly means to trust God—even when His plan makes no sense.Because sometimes faith is tested not in the light . . . but in the storm. And sometimes the path to truth begins where certainty ends.
