In dieser Arbeit untersuche ich die seit 1988 über mehrere Bände ausgebreitete fundamentale Kritik des deutschen Ethnologen'' und Philosophen Hans Peter Duerr an der Zivilisationstheorie, die Norbert Elias in den 1930er Jahren ent­ worfen und seitdem beständig weiterentwickelt hat. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, aus der Vielzahl von empirischen Belegen, die Duerr gegen Elias zusammengetragen hat, und aus den sich daran anschließenden Diskussionsbeiträgen zur Elias­ Duerr-Kontroverse theoretische Schlussfolgerungen über die Gültigkeit und Reichweite von Elias'' Zivilisationstheorie zu ziehen. Der erste Band von Hans Peter Duerr (geb. 1943) über den "Mythos vom Zivilisationsprozess", mit dem Titel "Nacktheit und Scham", erschien 1988. Darin rechnete Duerr ab mit dem Hauptwerk von Norbert Elias (1897-1990), seinem zuerst 1939 veröffentlichten Buch "Über den Prozeß der Zivilisation". Ein Jahrzehnt später sind noch drei weitere umfangreiche Bände von Duerrs Kritik am "Mythos vom Zivilisationsprozess" erschienen; ein abschließender fünfter Band ist angekündigt. '' In seinen "Mythos-Bänden" ist es nicht Duerrs Anliegen, sich auf die "Schultern von Riesen" (R. K. Merton) zu stellen, um trotz Zwergengröße weiter als diese zu sehen, oder beim "Fackellauf'' (Elias/Lepenies 1977: 67f) die Fackel von der vorangehenden Wissenschaftler­ generation aufzunehmen und sie ein Stück weiterzutragen. Duerr beansprucht nicht, einen Beitrag zur Modifizierung oder Weiterentwicklung von Elias'' Zivili­ sationstheorie zu leisten. Im Gegenteil zielt seine Kritik darauf ab, Elias'' Theorie In Deutschland wird unter Ethnologie oder - wie es früher hieß - Völkerkunde allgemein die Wissenschaft verstanden, die sich mit Sozialstruktur und Kultur sog.
