Sir William Jones (1746-94) was the foremost Orientalist of his generation and one of the greatest intellectual navigators of all time. He re-drew the map of European thought. This volume of essays is intended as a tribute to the distinguished medieval historian Christopher Brooke. It addresses new questions in areas of medieval history which Professor Brooke has made his own: urban life and religious life. The fourteen essays explore the coexistence of religious ideas and ecclesiastical institutions with urban practices and townspeople. They span five hundred years of the history of western Christendom, ranging from Magdeburg to Majorca, and from Cambridge to Cluny. The essays break new ground in a number of areas in medieval history: in economic history, the history of ideas, and the history of religious institutions. The contributors have been attuned throughout to the complex interactions of groups and ideas within urban space. Despite the significant ongoing work in the development of new database systems, many of the basic architectural and performance tradeoffs involved in their design have not previously been explored in a systematic manner. The designers of the various systems have adopted a wide range of strategies in areas such as process structure, client-server interaction, concurrency control, transaction management, and memory management. This monograph investigates several fundamental aspects of the emerging generation of database systems. It describes and investigates implementation techniques to provide high performance and scalability while maintaining the transaction semantics, reliability, and availability associated with more traditional database architectures. The common theme of the techniques developed here is the exploitation of client resources through caching-based data replication. Client Data Caching: A Foundation for High Performance Object Database Systems should be a value to anyone interested in the performance and architecture of distributed information systems in general and Object-based Database Management Systems in particular. It provides useful information for designers of such systems, as well as for practitioners who need to understand the inherent tradeoffs among the architectural alternatives in order to evaluate existing systems. Furthermore, many of the issues addressed in this book are relevant to other systems beyond the ODBMS domain. Such systems include shared-disk parallel database systems, distributed file systems, and distributed virtual memory systems. The presentation is suitable for practitioners and advanced students in all of these areas, although a basic understanding of database transaction semantics and techniques is assumed.

This novel is a designedly political document. Written at the time of the Hastings impeachment and set in the period of Hastings’s Orientalist government, Hartly House, Calcutta (1789) represents a dramatic delineation of the Anglo-Indian encounter. The novel constitutes a significant intervention in the contemporary debate concerning the nature of Hastings’s rule of India by demonstrating that it was characterised by an atmosphere of intellectual sympathy and racial tolerance. Within a few decades the Evangelical and Anglicising lobbies frequently condemned Brahmans as devious beneficiaries of a parasitic priestcraft, but Phebe Gibbes’s portrayal of Sophia’s Brahman and the religion he espouses represent a perception of India dignified by a sympathetic and tolerant attempt to dispel prejudice.

This is the first biography to foreground the importance of Hester Lynch Piozzi's Welsh heritage throughout her long life. As one anonymous reader put it, `Few eighteenth-century Welsh writers long resident in England continued to identify as strongly with their homeland.' Born in an obscure plwyf in Caernarvonshire the salonniere of Streatham was finally laid to rest in the vault of Tremeirchion church in the Vale of Clwyd. Hester had been mortified at the failure of her brewer husband Henry Thrale, and her mentor Dr Samuel Johnson, to appreciate the beauties of Wales. But her second husband, musician Gabriel Piozzi, was so enamoured that he proposed residing there. Newly-found confidence inspired Piozzi to write in her middle age, and her daringly personal biography (1786) and edition of Johnson's letters (1788) were runaway bestsellers. Her travel book (1789) treated the reader for the first time as an intimate friend, recounting her love affair with her husband's homeland in Italy, whose landscape reminded her so much of Wales.

Welcome to the Second International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM2001). The conference serves as a forum for the exchange of technical ideas and research results in the areas of mobility and database management. This year, we have a very exciting program for MDM2001. Many quality papers were submitted to the conference. All of the submitted papers were - viewed by at least three PC members. Due to the limitations of the program schedule as well as the desire to organize the conference using a single track format, we selected only 18 papers for full presentation at the conference. As a result many excellent papers could not be accepted. The papers chosen for presentation span a large range of topics, from n- work protocol issues up to the semantics of mobile applications. The common theme of all these papers is their recognition of the central role played by data managementtechniques in the developmentof the emerging worldof mobile and wireless applications. We have loosely organized these papers into six areas: 1. DATA MANAGEMENT ARCHITECTURES, 2. CONTENT DELIVERY, 3. DATA BROADCASTING, 4. CACHING AND HOARDING, 5. COPING WITH MOVEMENT, 6. NETWORKS AND SYSTEMS ISSUES In addition to the researchtrack, we havesought to broaden the scope of the conference with an industrial session as well as poster presentations. Overall, the program strikes a comfortable balance between applied and theoretically oriented papers.
