“Freshest page-turner this year”
A week in Cannes can be murder: Andy Carrick – an ex soldier still doing battle with himself – hunts for the cut-throat razor killer of a decadent advertising guru murdered during a long lunch.
At first the murder seems a real life-saver; Carrick aches to get back to the centre of things.
But suddenly he's not so sure. The investigation is leading him straight back to his own messy past, a dark and lonely place he’s in no hurry to revisit.
The action plunges through the famous hotels and bars of the French Riviera during festival season as Carrick begins to wonder if it’s really the crime of passion it’s been made to look?
Is it actually big business related?
Or maybe, just maybe, a brazen international modern art forgery scam?
When Carrick’s own alibi crumbles he starts wondering one more thing: can he survive seven days and nights in a town full of liars for hire?
Want vivid characters and tight plotting shot through with dry wit?
Strap yourself in.
Acclaimed internationally:
“I loved it. Witty and gritty.” - Morris & Partners
“Andy is a soldier, not a detective … Here’s hoping the author has more adventures planned for his appealing hero. A winning new detective who overcomes his demons.” - Kirkus Reviews
“A deeply layered tale ... There is humanity, flaws and perfection, moral decisions to be made, and more … Michael Newman has a way with language … His story is original, and his prose is twice that.” - (Five Stars) USA Book Reviews
“With the tension growing tighter with each page, and the questions piling up, this book hooks the reader right away and does not let go until the end. Highly recommend for anyone who loves for their mysteries to be thrilling, their characters to be flawed and compelling, and their settings to be dazzling. You will not be disappointed.” - (Five Stars) Goodreads
“Engaging, beautifully written and totally believable. I was completely compelled … What a unique book … With its themes of Fakery and Betrayal it’s really topical … Definitely recommend.” - Amazon Australia
“Will have you hooked the instant you turn the first page … electrifying story of thrill and suspense …. Michael Newman constructs this story line beautifully, with complex character development … and just the right amount of suspense at every turn … Once you start this book, you won’t be able to put it down. Highly recommended!” - (Five Stars) Amazon

Art criticism is spurned by universities, but widely produced and read. It is seldom theorized and its history has hardly been investigated. The State of Art Criticism presents an international conversation among art historians and critics that considers the relation between criticism and art history and poses the question of whether criticism may become a university subject.
Contributors include Dave Hickey, James Panero, Stephen Melville, Lynne Cook, Michael Newman, Whitney Davis, Irit Rogoff, Guy Brett and Boris Groys.

New York City English is one of the most recognizable of US dialects, and research on it launched modern sociolinguistics. Yet the city’s speech has never before received a comprehensive description and analysis. In this book, Michael Newman examines the differences and similarities among the ways English is spoken by the extraordinarily diverse population living in the NY dialect region. He uses data from a variety of sources including older dialectological accounts, classic and recent variationist studies, and original research on speakers from around the dialect region. All levels of language are explored including phonology, morphosyntax, lexicon, and discourse along with a history of English in the region. But this book provides far more than a dialectological and historical inventory of linguistic features. The forms used by different groups of New Yorkers are discussed in terms of their complex social meanings. Furthermore, Newman illustrates the varied forms of sociolinguistic significance with examples from the personal experiences of a variety of New Yorkers and includes links to sound files on the publisher’s site and videos on YouTube. The result is a rigorous but accessible and compelling account of the English spoken in this great city.

What should be done after the end of a repressive regime or a civil war? How can bitter divisions be resolved in a way that combines reconciliation with accountability?
In this book, Michael Newman accessibly introduces these debates, outlining the key ideas and giving an overview of the vast literature by reference to case studies in such places as South Africa, Cambodia and Sierra Leone. While recognising that every situation is different, he argues that is vital to contend fully with the past and address the fundamental causes of mass human rights abuses.
A readable overview for those coming to the subject of transitional justice for the first time, and food for thought for those already familiar with it, this book is invaluable in areas ranging from politics and international relations to peace and conflict studies, law, human rights and philosophy.

This book describes highlights, and the occasional lowlight, of Michael Newman''s life. It will make you laugh, shudder and reflect. Newman takes you to far-flung places - Jamaica, America, South Africa, France and England - with a witty mind and a cross-cultural vision of the world. This is a personal memoir delighting in the inconsistencies of life. Among the highlights, he talks his way out of a mugging in Kingston, Jamaica, tells the world''s longest joke in Covent Garden, joins a picket line of a clothing workers'' strike in Johannesburg, and finds himself in Paris during the riots that swept across France in May 1968. Among the lowlights, he flies a car in north Pakistan and comes a social cropper in Dallas.
