This book introduces a new paradigm, Geographic Hypermedia, which emerges from the convergence of Geographic Information Science and - permedia technology. Both GI Science and hypermedia have been rapidly evolving fields. The initial idea of Geographic Hypermedia was born in 2004 when the editors had been invited to organize a workshop in conju- tion with the ‘Hypertext’ conference organized annually by the Special - terest Group of the Association for Computing Machinery. The purpose of the workshop was to examine how hypermedia concepts and tools may be applied in geographical domains. The workshop was eventually held in conjunction with the Maps and the Internet Commission of the International Cartographic Association at the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers in Denver, Colorado, in April 2005. The Denver workshop was a successful event, bringing together mul- disciplinary researchers and professionals in the area of Geographic - permedia. Researchers from four continents and well recognized insti- tions presented their work and exchanged opinions about the new pa- digm, its content and distinct characteristics from other paradigms. Extended versions of the papers presented at the workshop along with some invited chapters from experts in the field led to the compendium of the twenty-five chapters in this book volume. Geographic Hypermedia is not yet a mature paradigm but we aspire to provide the scientific community with a contemporary view of Geographic Hypermedia, present an overview of its progress and current status, while also promoting further discussion and research.

Multimedia Cartography provides a contemporary overview of the issues related to multimedia cartography and the design and production elements that are unique to this area of mapping. The book has been written for professional cartographers interested in moving into multimedia mapping, for cartographers already involved in producing multimedia titles who wish to discover the approaches that other practitioners in multimedia cartography have taken and for students and academics in the mapping sciences and related geographical fields wishing to update their knowledge about current issues related to cartographic design and production. It provides a new approach to cartography – one based on the exploitation of the many ‘rich media’ components and avant-garde approach that multimedia offers.

This book provides for the first time a general overview of research activities related to location and map-based services. These activities have emerged over the last years, especially around issues of positioning, spatial modelling, cartographic communication as well as in the fields of ubiquitious cartography, geo-pervasive services, user-centered modelling and geo-wiki activities. The innovative and contemporary character of these topics has lead to a great variety of interdisciplinary contributions, from academia to business, from computer science to geodesy. Topics cover an enormous range with heterogenous relationships to the main book issues. Whilst contemporary cartography aims at looking at new and efficient ways for communicating spatial information the development and availability of technologies like mobile networking, mobile devices or short-range sensors lead to interesting new possibilities for achieving this aim. By trying to make use of available technologies, cartography and a variety of related disciplines look specifically at user-centered and conte- aware system development, as well as new forms of supporting wayfinding and navigation systems. Little notice was taken of the ? rst web map but the development of Internet cartography since has been nothing but remarkable. The new medium of communication changed maps from static entities on paper to dynamic products of interaction. Millionsof maps are now created by servers every hour and transmitted through the Internet. When we need to ? nd a place or ? nd out about a place, we turn immediately to these servers through the Internet. In a few short years, the World Wide Web has transformed the Internet into the primary medium for the dissemi- tion of spatial information in the form of maps.

The book serves as a collection of multi-disciplinary contributions related to Geographic Hypermedia and highlights the technological aspects of GIS. Specifically, it focuses on its database and database management system. The methodologies for modeling and handling geographic data are described. It presents the novel models, methods and tools applied in Spatial Decision Support paradigm.

The Internet has become the major form of map delivery. The current presentation of maps is based on the use of online services. This session examines developments related to online methods of map delivery, particularly Application Programmer Interfaces (APIs) and MapServices in general, including Google Maps API and similar services. Map mashups have had a major impact on how spatial information is presented. The advantage of using a major online mapping site is that the maps represent a common and recognizable representation of the world. Overlaying features on top of these maps provides a frame of reference for the map user. A particular advantage for thematic mapping is the ability to spatially reference thematic data.
