The New Normal: Evaluating Social and Ethical Concerns in the Information Age
New technologies have brought us many benefits, but they have also raised many social and ethical concerns. The authors view in Ethics for the Information Age is that we ought to approach every new technology in a thoughtful manner, considering not just its short-term benefits, but also how its long-term use will affect our lives. A thoughtful response to information technology requires a basic understanding of its history, an awareness of current information-technology- related issues, and a familiarity with ethics.
In the Seventh Edition, Quinn provides an impartial look at the problems technology both solves and creates. As in previous editions, he presents information in a manner that leads you to arrive at your own conclusions on crucial ethics questions. Weaving in a vital dose of IT history, the new topics keep the book relevant and can function as either a sole reference or a supplemental guide for computer ethics courses.

According to the author, The Other Shore is a work of true fiction, a picaresque novella, woven of tissues of truth and make-believe. Any truth to be found in it exists in the eye and inner ear of the reader.
It is a story of the road. It was the late nineteen-sixties, the summer of love. Two friends dropped out of college, disputing being labelled ''dropouts'', because deep inside they felt they were dropping into another reality. Discovering it possible to travel down any road by holding out a thumb, they used this magical accomplishment to travel east, carrying a library of gnosis in their backpacks.
Fifty years later, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has restricted travel. One lies in a coma in Scotland and the other lives in a rainforest in Australia, suffering from depression. As part of his narrative therapy, he is encouraged to get in touch with his friend and attempt to bring him out of his coma. Every morning, the narrator sits on his veranda with his phone, telling his friend stories from his journal of their travels half a century before. He examines photographs of his friend''s wood-carvings in an attempt to understand what lies behind them. Perhaps they hold the way out of the dark wood his friend is lost in. Perhaps the journal entries hold the key to a forgotten memory, vital to transforming his state of mind.

Jeremy Bentham – philosopher, theorist of law and of the art of government – was among the most influential figures of the early nineteenth century, and the approach he pioneered – utilitarianism – remains central to the modern world.
In this new introduction to his ideas, Michael Quinn shows how Bentham sought to be an engineer or architect of choices and to illuminate the methods of influencing human conduct to good ends, by focusing on how people react to the various physical, legal, institutional, normative and cultural factors that confront them as decision-makers. Quinn examines how Bentham adopted utility as the critical standard for the development and evaluation of government and public policy, and explains how he sought to apply this principle to a range of areas, from penal law to democratic reform, before concluding with an assessment of his contemporary relevance. He argues that Bentham simultaneously sought both to facilitate the implementation of governmental will and to expose misrule by rendering all exercises of public power transparent to the public on whose behalf it was exercised.
This book will be essential reading for any student or scholar of Bentham, as well as those interested in the history of political thought, philosophy, politics, ethics and utilitarianism.

The New Normal: Evaluating Social and Ethical Concerns in the Information Age. In our age of unparalleled technological advancement, it is important that we address the social and ethical considerations that these advances engender. Ethics for the Information Age seeks to do exactly that, proposing a thoughtful approach that considers not only the short-term benefits of a piece of technology, but what the possible long-term effects could be, as well. Such an approach requires a solid grounding in ethics and logic, an understanding of the history of technology, and a familiarity with current and cutting edge information technologies and their related issues.
The 8th Edition has been updated considerably, notably in the inclusion of a new appendix, Appendix B, which focuses on common logical fallacies and structuring local arguments, and material relating to a multitude of emergent information technology developments and controversies.
