This Element explores the relationship between phenomenology and mathematics. Its focus is the mathematical thought of Edmund Husserl, founder of phenomenology, but other phenomenologists and phenomenologically-oriented mathematicians, including Weyl, Becker, Gödel, and Rota, are also discussed. After outlining the basic notions of Husserl's phenomenology, the author traces Husserl's journey from his early mathematical studies. Phenomenology's core concepts, such as intention and intuition, each contributed to the emergence of a phenomenological approach to mathematics. This Element examines the phenomenological conceptions of natural number, the continuum, geometry, formal systems, and the applicability of mathematics. It also situates the phenomenological approach in relation to other schools in the philosophy of mathematics-logicism, formalism, intuitionism, Platonism, the French epistemological school, and the philosophy of mathematical practice.

"Being and Number in Heidegger's Thought" examines the relationship between mathematics and ontology in Heidegger's thought, from his earliest writings, through "Being and Time", up to and including his work of the 1930s. The book charts the unfamiliar territory of Heidegger's conception of mathematics, and explores the relationship between time and number in/Heidegger's magnum opus, "Being and Time". Michael Roubach offers a new analysis of Heideggerian finitude, one of the most recalcitrant problems in the interpretation on "Being and Time". In addition, he situates Heidegger's thought with respect to some of the core debates in logic and the foundations of mathematics.The book goes on to elucidate Heidegger's reading of mathematics as ontology in his writings from the 1930s. Roubach argues that exploring the connection between mathematics and ontology in Heidegger's thought affords us new insight into the origins and evolution of Heidegger's radically original take on the traditional problems of philosophy.This facilitates a reassessment, not only of specific issues in Heideggerian thought, but also of the larger question of Heidegger's place in twentieth-century philosophy.

This book examines the many faces of philosophy of time, including the metaphysical aspects, natural science issues, and the consciousness of time. It brings together the different methodologies of investigating the philosophy of time. It does so to counter the growing fragmentation of the field with regard to discussions, and the existing cleavage between analytic and continental traditions in philosophy. The book’s multidirectional approach to the notion of time contributes to a better understanding of time's metaphysical, physical and phenomenological aspects. It helps clarify the presuppositions underpinning the analytic and continental traditions in the philosophy of time and offers ways in which the differences between them can be bridged.
