Utredningen efter kraschen visar att det fanns två spädbarn ombord. Är Mirakelbarnet från Mont Terri Lyse-Rose eller Emilie? De båda flickornas respektive familjer hävdar envist att den överlevande bebisen är just deras. Det är början på en fejd utan synbart slut mellan arbetarklassfamiljen Vitral, som livnär sig på att sälja snacks till turisterna på stränderna i norra Frankrike, och överklassfamiljen de Carville, som gjort sig en förmögenhet i oljebranschen. Arton år senare är privatdetektiven som fått uppdraget att lösa mysteriet med flickans identitet på väg att ge upp. Men så hittar han en ledtråd som för honom betydligt närmare sanningen. För nära. Han hittas död innan han hinner berätta om sin upptäckt.
