Les plantes sont indispensables à notre survie, mais leur connaissance est longtemps restée empirique. Au recensement des quelque 400 000 espèces ont succédé la physiologie végétale puis la génomique, il y a quelques dizaines d’années. C’est cette dernière période qu’a vécue Michel Delseny : une passionnante aventure scientifique qui s’est déroulée dans les laboratoires d’Europe, d’Asie et d’Amérique, et dont le point d’orgue a été, en 2000, le premier séquençage complet du génome d’une plante : l’arabette des dames (Arabidopsis thaliana). La botanique était désormais une science « dure »… Bien d’autres plantes, a priori plus « utiles » tels le riz, le maïs, mais aussi le fraisier ou le peuplier, ont depuis vu leur génome séquencé, offrant une riche moisson de données aux spécialistes de la botanique, de l’agronomie, de l’alimentation et de la pharmacologie. La vision moléculaire des plantes augure une véritable révolution scientifique. Au-delà, les génomes de plantes lèvent le voile sur le mystère des origines, et la façon dont les plus anciens végétaux – une algue, une mousse, puis une fougère – ont engendré le rosier, le baobab et le séquoïa géant. Michel Delseny, spécialiste de génomique végétale, est directeur de recherche émérite au CNRS et membre de l’Académie des sciences.
