This volume examines for the first time the most important methodological issues concerning Christian poetry – i.e. biblical and theological poetry in classical meters – from a diachronic perspective. Thus, it is possible to evaluate the doctrinal significance of these compositions and the role that they play in the development of Christian theological ideas and biblical exegesis.

Though the Heptateuchos is possibly the most organic attempt at poetic rewriting of the Old Testament, attributed to “Cyprian the Gaul” by R. Peiper, the latest editor of the text in CSEL 23 (1891), we do not have a comprehensive analysis of this poem yet that can provide a clear grasp of the poem’s compositional logic, show which of its biblical model’s content was used, and expound the context and purpose of its versification. It is apparent that in many respects the Heptateuchos is still profoundly unknown. For this reason the UR 4377 of Catholic Theology and Religious Sciences of the University of Strasbourg, notably its ERCAM (“Équipe de recherches sur le christianisme antique et médiéval”), with its statutory members and its associate members, is engaged in the publication of a new critical edition of each of the seven books of the anonymous poem of uncertain date, the Heptateuchos, also providing an exhaustive commentary. The essays collected in this volume represent a preliminary work for the upcoming edition and commentary planned by the members of UR 4377 in Strasbourg. Above all, they show how the anonymous author was interested in safeguarding the criterion of the narratio probabilis in the poem, through probable references to Judeo-Hellenistic literature and by refining the exegetical reading of the text with references to classical and Christian poetry.
›Versus ad picturas‹ – Text/Image Relation in Greek, Latin and Arabic Poetry

Over the last 30 years, many books, conferences and volumes have been devoted to the relationship between text and image in the Late Antiquity and in the Middle Ages. But there has been little space for poetic texts, which, in addition to the direct or mediated message, also demand the attention of the analyst through the impact of the intertext of the entire Latin poetic tradition, multiplying the levels of meaning and therefore the possibilities of interpretation. In relation to the recognition of the need to consider texts (mental or written) as sources of inspiration for images, we are now in a position to take a further step by applying to medieval culture the concept of iconotext developed by Liliane Louvel (2018) for modern literature. In this vein, the Versus ad picturas conference therefore aims to contribute to the study of the relationship between the images we now call artistic, painted on walls, fabrics, stained glass or parchments, and the verses that often accompany them materially or ideally, and which are now increasingly recognised as essential to their cultural understanding and social framing, in the hope of bringing us closer to the meaning hidden in their combination and the meaning perceived by the commissioners, executors and viewers of the time.

La restauration de la création se propose d’examiner le statut des animaux dans la pensée chrétienne ancienne et médiévale selon une perspective eschatologique, centrée sur la question du salut des animaux dans le projet divin. L'ouvrage est organisé en trois parties : les sources bibliques, notamment la promesse du renouvellement de la création dans Rm 8, 21 ; les élaborations doctrinales dans la période patristique puis au Moyen Âge ; enfin, des réflexions contemporaines à propos du statut des animaux dans nos sociétés. Souvent absente du débat sociétal à propos des animaux, la perspective historique chrétienne proposée dans ce volume se veut une contribution originale à la réflexion actuelle sur le statut juridique et éthique des animaux.La restauration de la création aims to examine the status of animals in ancient and medieval Christian thought following an eschatological perspective, that is, focusing on the question of the salvation of animals according to the divine plan. The volume is articulated in three parts: Biblical sources, in particular the promise of the renewal of creation according to Rm 8, 21; Patristic and medieval doctrinal elaborations on the question; finally, contemporary considerations regarding the status of animals in our societies. Often absent from the current social debate on the subject, the historical Christian perspective which this volume proposes is intended as an original contribution to today’s ongoing reflexion on the legal and ethical status of animals.
