Nanoindentation and nanotribology are fundamental, evolving, and complementary disciplines within materials science. In recent years there has been rapid convergence of the biomechanical and materials disciplines, as well as explosive growth of the nanotube and nanostructured materials fields. The expansion of nanomechanical testing into these new fields has been accompanied by similarly rapid growth in our understanding of, and ability to perform, mechanical tests with ever-smaller forces and displacements. The understanding of fundamental mechanical measurement techniques must continue to advance to design new systems and materials to meet the challenges of technology. This book is a snapshot of the state of the art in nanoindentation and nanotribology, and highlights emerging topics including the development of new methods for characterizing nanoscale mechanical and tribological properties. Additional topics include: size effects and indentation of thin films; nanotribology and friction; modeling, simulation and analysis of indentation data and nanomechanics of polymers, time-dependent characterization.

This volume represents a collection of papers from five distinct yet related symposia: Symposium L, 'Biomimetic Nanoscale Platforms, Particles, and Scaffolds for Biomedical Applications'; Symposium M, 'Bioinspired Directional Surfaces - From Nature to Engineered Textured Surfaces'; Symposium Q, 'Functional and Responsive Materials Exploiting Peptide and Protein Self-Assembly'; Symposium R, 'Fundamentals of Assembly in Biomolecular and Biomimetic Systems'; and Symposium S, 'Directed Self-Assembly for Nanopatterning'. This volume is thus the first for which the papers are from a larger group of thematically related symposia, with emphasis on bioinspiration and biomimicry, self-assembly and natural materials.

This book is a comprehensive text designed to summarize the field of women’s health engineering and provide multidisciplinary accounts of research in the field. This is the first book to systematically define the field of women’s health engineering and detail key topics, including tissue engineered systems of the breast and female reproductive system, biomaterials for women’s health purposes, and sex differences in other tissue systems. The aim of this work is to create a key text for this emerging field that can be utilized by both researchers and students interested in these topics. This is an ideal resource for researchers and students studying women’s health engineering, biology, engineering, and MD students.

Nanoindentation is ideal for the characterization of inhomogeneous biological materials. However, the use of nanoindentation techniques in biological systems is associated with some distinctively different techniques and challenges. The book presents the basic science of nanoindentation, including the background of contact mechanics underlying indentation technique and the instrumentation used to gather mechanical data. It provides perspectives that are optimized for biological applications, including discussions on hydrated materials and adaptations for low-stiffness materials. The book also covers the applications of nanoindentation technique in biological materials. Highlighting current challenges, it concludes with an insightful forecast of the future.
