This book examines all aspects of the imaging of spinal infection. The diagnosis of spinal infection has been a challenge for many years. In addition to clinical and laboratory findings and histopathological examination, imaging has a major role in aiding and expediting the correct diagnosis. This book comprehensively addresses how imaging can help in localizing the site and specifying the extent of a variety of spinal infections.
After introductory chapters on the epidemiology and pathophysiology of spinal infection, the different imaging techniques are discussed in detail. The bulk of the book addresses different specific spinal infections caused by various pathogens. These comprise chapters on hematogeneous pyogenic spondylodiscitis, iatrogenic spinal infection, pyogenic epidural abscess, spinal brucellosis, salmonella spondylodiscitis, spinal tuberculosis, spinal hydatidosis, and fungal spondylodiscitis. The last chapter describes diagnostic algorithm of spinal infection.
The book is written by Tunisian, Asian and European experts and will be a valuable resource for all medical practitioners who deal with spinal infection, including radiologists, rheumatologists and orthopedic surgeons.

This book focuses on histopathological features of bone and joint infections. Bone and joint infection is a serious health problem that has increased in the past two decades. Their diagnosis requires the collaboration of physicians, radiologists, microbiologists and pathologists. Symptoms of these lesions are nonspecific often resulting in a delayed diagnosis. Radiology is needed for the diagnosis of bone and joint infection, determining the severity and extent of disease. The radiological diagnosis of these infections is challenging because of multiple overlaps with tumor etiologies.
Effective antibiotic treatment relies on the detection of the causative organisms and its their susceptibility testing. However, culture is time consuming. Besides, administering antibiotics prior to performing surgery or biopsy, the low virulent bacteria, tissues contaminations and sampling errors limit the reliability of bone culture. Histology is a key tool for the diagnosis of boneand joint infection by evaluating the tissue reaction pattern caused by the pathogen. The histopathological diagnosis is based on the evaluation of the tissue changes and the leukocyte infiltration pattern.
The purpose of this book will be to report in detail the histopathological features of bone and joint infections with emphasis on key diagnostic features and differential diagnoses. It will also highlight special stain and other ancillary tests that can be used as an aid in the histological diagnosis.

This comprehensive book provides a detailed description of imaging techniques and findings in the detection, characterization, local staging and post-treatment tumors of the osseous spine. In the first part of the book, the epidemiology, classification, pathology, genetics and molecular biology are discussed. The second part gives an overview of the basic semiology, imaging modalities including CT, MRI, PET and PET-CT, and staging. The third part of the book discusses the imaging of primary bone tumors of the spine and its mimics. In the fourth part, the treatment of tumors and tumor-like conditions of the spine is reviewed. The final part of the book summarizes post-treatment evaluation and assessment.
Thus, the book will be a useful reference for general and musculoskeletal radiologists and residents, orthopaedic surgeons, oncologists and histopathologists.

Musculoskeletal infections are a diagnostic challenge due to their frequently non-specific clinical presentations. Imaging has a key role in the evaluation of various infections affecting the extremities, in aiding timely and appropriate patient management, and reducing the risk of patient morbidity. This book begins by giving an overview and classification of infections that affect the appendicular skeleton, joints and soft tissues. The pathophysiology and histopathology of these infections, and the practical applications of key diagnostic techniques such as microbiology, various types of diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology are addressed. The full range of pyogenic infections, as well as tuberculosis, melioidosis and cystic echinococcosis, are covered in detail. Imaging of various fungal infections and atypical infections are also addressed.
Specific chapters are dedicated to important topics such as post-traumatic and orthopedic hardware-related infections, pediatric musculoskeletal infections, musculoskeletal infections in AIDS, and the diabetic foot. The last chapter provides an algorithmic approach defining the diagnosis and management of appendicular musculoskeletal infections.
This book fills a gap in the literature by providing an updated and richly-illustrated imaging book that comprehensively covers appendicular musculoskeletal infections in a structured fashion.
