This book explores Virginia Woolf’s afterlives in contemporary biographical novels and drama. It offers an extensive analysis of a wide array of literary productions in which Virginia Woolf appears as a fictional character or a dramatis persona. It examines how Woolf’s physical and psychological features, as well as the values she stood for, are magnified, reinforced or distorted to serve the authors’ specific agendas. Beyond general theoretical issues about this flourishing genre, this study raises specific questions about the literary and cultural relevance of Woolf’s fictional representations. These contemporary narratives inform us about Woolf’s iconicity, but they also mirror our current literary, cultural and political concerns. Based on a close examination of twenty-five works published between 1972 and 2019, the book surveys various portraits of Woolf as a feminist, pacifist, troubled genius, gifted innovative writer, treacherous, competitive sister and tragic, suicidal character, or, on the contrary, as a caricatural comic spirit, inspirational figure and perspicacious amateur sleuth. By resurrecting Virginia Woolf in contemporary biofiction, whether to enhance or debunk stereotypes about the historical figure, the authors studied here contribute to her continuous reinvention. Their diverse fictional portraits constitute a way to reinforce Woolf’s literary status, re-evaluate her work, rejuvenate critical interpretations and augment her cultural capital in the twenty-first century

Based on a close examination of twenty-five works published between 1956 and 2023, and authored by writers with eclectic professional backgrounds, the book surveys various portraits of Woolf as a feminist, a troubled genius prone to bouts of madness, a gifted innovative writer carried by the flow of her creative process, a woman in love, a competitive sister, an overprotected wife, a delighted sightseer in France, and a tormented, suicidal figure. Woolf’s numerous representations as a character in French literature attest that she has acquired a reputation outside the English-speaking realm and has the capacity to adapt to other literary and cultural backgrounds. The Edinburgh Companion to Virginia Woolf and Transnational Perspectives considers the many steps of cultural mediation that have produced the varied versions of Woolf that readers and viewers encounter in national and transnational contexts. Organised in three parts, this international, multi-authored collection explores how these many Woolfs emerge in countries beyond Western Europe and North America, including Brazil, Lithuania, Japan, Turkey and the Philippines. The chapters in the first part explore how Woolf's works are edited, translated, produced and read in many languages, media, platforms and disciplines, both historically and contemporarily. The second part focuses on Woolf's legacy and on how Woolf lives on in the works of contemporary artists and cultural creatives. Given the importance of academics in mediating this reception, the third and final section reads Woolf through new critical perspectives, also focusing on the more recent reception she is enjoying on the web.

Shows how after the Nazis came to power, prominent exile writers used biofiction to provide readers with a means of identifying root causes of political oppression. There were biofictions before the 20th century, but the literary form surged in the 1930s, especially among writers who fled Europe to escape the Nazis. What would be the best way to challenge and counteract the Nazis’ oppressive political agenda? This was a question those writers sought to answer. And as Michael Lackey argues, one answer revolved around the literary form of biofiction – or literature that fictionalizes and metaphorizes the life of a real person – which allowed exiled writers to identify root causes of political oppression and to propose healthier and more socially just ways of thinking and doing. By charting the rise, evolution, and legitimization of biofiction from Friedrich Nietzsche through Lion Feuchtwanger and Thomas Mann, German Exile Biofiction sets the stage for a more compelling analysis and understanding of the major biofictions from the 1930s, which foreground the Nazis’ Christian nationalist political agenda. Using the most up-to-date scholarship about biofiction and the Nazis’ Christian nationalism, this study offers new and more grounded approaches to the way biofiction functions in relation to the political and how it can be used to expose and combat dangerous political leaders like Hitler and the Nazis. But more than that, German Exile Biofiction shows how metaphorizing lives can enable readers and audiences today to counteract the dangers of contemporary Christian nationalisms.
