The numerous and far-reaching socio-political transformations that have taken place on the European continent since the mid-20th century have stipulated the emergence of new approaches and research fields in the social sciences. One of these is the development of a Sociology of Europeanization. This textbook provides an overview of its major topics, concepts, and research approaches. In diesem Band wird die Grenzsoziologie als neues soziologisches Themenfeld abgesteckt und in das Gebiet eingeführt. Territoriale Grenzen und ihre Wirkungen sind zu einem wichtigen Thema der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung geworden. Gleichwohl ist die Soziologie noch eine fundierte Auseinandersetzung sowohl mit der Entstehung als auch mit Wirkung von Grenzen und Grenzziehungen bisher schuldig geblieben. Der vorliegende Band reagiert auf dieses Defizit und beantwortet auf der Grundlage sowohl klassischer soziologischer Theorieansätze, als auch neuerer theoretischer Überlegungen und empirischer Untersuchungen die Frage nach der spezifischen Bedeutung von Grenzen für die Soziologie. Die Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit Entstehung, Funktion und Wandel von Staatsgrenzen und mit den Faktoren, die die Transformation von Staatsgrenzen und ihrer Bedeutung bewirken und schließlich mit der Frage nach den sozialen Folgen von Grenzen.

​Im Fokus des Bandes stehen die Beziehungen zwischen Ungleichheitskonflikten und Europäisierungsprozessen. Wie und wann tragen Ungleichheitskonflikte zum Wandel europäischer Ordnungen bei? Inwieweit werden sie durch europäische Rechtsetzung, Staatstätigkeit oder ökonomische Regelungen produziert? Die Autorinnen und Autoren untersuchen in ihren Beiträgen nicht nur die Transformationen nationaler Ungleichheitsstrukturen und die Entstehung neuer, spezifisch europäischer Ungleichheiten. Vor allem gehen sie auch den Veränderungen der Situationsdeutungen und Problemwahrnehmungen in Bezug auf soziale Ungleichheiten im Kontext der Europäisierung nach. Damit zielen die Beiträge sowohl auf eine konfliktphänomenologische Erweiterung der Europasoziologie als auch auf eine konflikttheoretische Ergänzung historisch-soziologischer Europaforschung.
