Als Mitte Oktober 1918 siebzehnjährige Schüler aus Essen nach Pommern fuhren, um dort bei der Kartoffelernte zu helfen, konnten sie sich kein anderes Deutschland vorstellen als das Kaiserreich. Bei ihrer Rückkehr ins Ruhrgebiet Anfang November hatten der Kaiser abgedankt, die Revolution gesiegt und der Krieg war vorbei.Die in diesem Band abgedruckten, kommentierten und eingeordneten 35 Schüleraufsätze, geschrieben Ende November und Anfang Dezember 1918, behandeln das Weltkriegsende und die Revolution. Während eine Schülergruppe über ihre Erlebnisse bei der Kartoffelernte im ländlichen Pommern in den letzten Kriegswochen und zu Beginn der Revolution berichtete, schrieb eine andere über den Revolutionsverlauf in ihrer Heimatstadt Essen. Persönliche Erfahrungen, Hoffnungen, Erwartungen und Enttäuschungen werden in diesen Aufsätzen sichtbar und zeigen eine Vielfalt von Reaktionen junger Leute auf die politische Umbruchphase Ende 1918.
