Rulers and Raptors argues that by studying animal biographies we gain a new perspective on early modern court society. Combining court studies and historical animal studies, it brings together two vibrant but rarely combined fields of research and shows how the presence of non-human creatures shaped everyday life and political representation in Europe's dynastic centres. Through an in-depth analysis of the symbolic and practical functions of birds of prey in courtly life, the book demonstrates that in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, falconry was much more than a hunting technique: it served as a model for the mutual empowerment of the sovereign and his noble subjects—the essence of the Baroque style of government that gave rise to European court society.Weber pays close attention to the birds' life trajectories and thereby shines a spotlight on a large network of agents, including rural bird catchers, bourgeois animal traders, and noble falconers at court who made the aerial spectacles possible. Focusing on these peoples' interactions with the raptors, the book proposes to rethink early modern human-animal relations, showing that falcons escaped clear distinctions between wild and domestic, nature and civilization. The book thus simultaneously shows how early modern European rulers valued raptors as a key symbol of their power—and how this very symbol of monarchical sovereignty pointed to the limits of human control over the animal kingdom on the eve of the Anthropocene.This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. Für die Gesandten frühneuzeitlicher Fürsten war die Eidgenossenschaft ein äusserst schwieriges Terrain. Wildheit gehört zu den grundlegenden kulturellen Zuweisungen von Animalität. Auch wenn die Definitionen von ''wild'' und ''Wildheit'' vorläufig und wandelbar bleiben und sich nicht an der Spezieszugehörigkeit festmachen lassen, wird das Wilde doch allgemein als das Ungezügelte, Ungezähmte, Fremde und Sprachlose verstanden. Wildheit ist dann paradoxerweise sowohl das, was nicht gezähmt werden kann, als auch das, was unterworfen werden muss.Im Anthropozän tendieren wir dazu, das Wilde als eine Art utopische Gegenwelt zur Zivilisation zu sehen. Das Wilde wird dabei eine rhetorische Formel für Freiheit jenseits von menschlicher Kontrolle oder Restriktionen. Als Gedankenkonstrukt entzieht sich das Wilde also einer klaren Bewertung. Es ist niemals lediglich eine negative Figur der Aus- und Abgrenzung des Anderen und des Unzivilisierten, sondern kann ganz im Gegenteil auch als positive, vitale Qualität gelten und damit zu einem Aktionsmodell mit subversiver Kraft werden.Die Beiträge in dieser Ausgabe von Tierstudien analysieren, wie Wildheit in der Kunst und Dichtung, aber auch in der Jagd und Reiterei repräsentiert und produziert wird. Sie diskutieren aber auch die Hilfspflichten gegenüber wildlebenden Tieren und die Wildtiergesetzgebung. Neben Wölfen, Pferden und Hunden werden auch "wilde Kinder", nichtmenschliche Primaten sowie asiatische Marienkäfer untersucht. Drei Bildstrecken zeigen das Wilde als Raum kreativer Freiheit.

Wenn eine große Zahl von Menschen an einem Ort zusammenkommt, kann dies zufällig oder beiläufig geschehen wie in den Einkaufsstraßen der globalen Metropolen. Folgen solche Agglomerationen politischen Impulsen, dann kann man in Anlehnung an den Historiker Georges Lefebvre (1874–1959) bereits von einer Art "Versammlung" (rassemblement) sprechen, die wenigstens basale Formen der Verfasstheit aufzuweisen pflegt.Wie in Jenseits der Ordnung? anhand von Beispielen aus dem gesamten europäischen Raum erörtert wird, war dies in der Frühen Neuzeit kaum anders. Auf der einen Seite erfüllte die Menge zu dieser Zeit eine konstitutionelle Funktion, indem sie im Rahmen ritueller und zeremonieller Formen dazu beitrug, die normativen Grundlagen der Vergemeinschaftung immer wieder zur Anschauung zu bringen und damit auch performativ zu befestigen. Dem entsprach eine politische Epistemologie, die sich lange auf die Evidenz organologischer Körperbilder und Metaphern stützte. Auf der anderen Seite war die Frühe Neuzeit auch eine Epoche, die von zahllosen kollektiven Protesten geprägt war, durch die Konflikte und soziale Spannungen prozessiert wurden.Orientiert an den Kategorien Gewalt, Verkörperungen und Steuerung bewegen sich die Beiträge des Bands in dem damit umrissenen Spannungsfeld. Konzeptuell schließt er einerseits an Debatten an, die sich in den letzten Jahren um die Relevanz von Schwärmen, Meuten oder Multitudes herum entfaltet haben. Andererseits geht es ihm darum, diese Debatten teils zu historisieren, teils mit historischer Tiefenschärfe auszustatten.

In diesem Band von Tierstudien geht es um die verschiedenen Ebenen der vergeschlechtlichten Beziehung von Menschen zu anderen Tieren, aber auch anderer Tiere untereinander. Die Autor*innen untersuchen, inwieweit sich Konzepte der Gender-Theorie eignen, um die Performativität von Geschlecht in tierlichen und tierbezogenen Praktiken, die diese als männliche und weibliche Aktivitäten darstellen, herauszuarbeiten. Ein Aspekt, der befragt wird, ist, inwiefern Tiere nicht nur ein Geschlecht, sondern auch gender haben, das in diesen Praktiken ebenfalls hergestellt wird.Geschlecht im Sinne von sex bestimmt häufig darüber, welchen Tieren Menschen erlauben, sich fortzupflanzen. Das ganze Feld der Tierzucht basiert auf der vergeschlechtlichten Zuchtwahl: Haustiere werden kastriert oder sterilisiert, mit Hormonvergabe wird die Fortpflanzungsfähigkeit von Nutztieren gefördert, Verhütungsmittel werden in Taubenfutter gemischt und männliche Küken geschreddert.Gender hingegen bestimmt den sozialen Ort von Gruppen und Individuen – und dazu gehören auch Tiere. Zwar handelt es sich nicht selten um Projektionen menschlicher Vorstellungen auf die Tierwelt, doch nimmt man kulturelle Ko-Produktion und Ko-Evolution ernst, muss angenommen werden, dass diese Projektionen zu Praktiken geführt haben, die sich in die Körper und die Kultur der Tiere eingeschrieben haben.Zu den Themen des Bandes zählen Animal Drag, Zoosexualität, tierliche Homosexualität, hegemoniale Männlichkeit in der Mensch-Tier-Beziehung und die Pferdeliebe von Mädchen. Auch Geschlechterkonstellationen und vergeschlechtliche Mensch-Tier-Verhältnisse in der Falknerei, der Hundehaltung, der Schweinezucht und im Zibetkatzenhandel kommen zur Sprache.
