The intersection of leadership and culture is undertheorized. This Element looks behind familiar titles in leadership at materials from anthropology, sociology, and history to gain a more nuanced understanding of culture. Of particular relevance is an interpretive approach, elaborated in the works of Simmel, Cassirer, Ortega y Gasset, and Gadamer. A five-part schema examines permutations pertaining to the relationship between culture and leadership - as separate, conflicting, derivative, or engaged - with the most attractive being the possibility that leadership and culture are mutually constituting. To explain cultural change, Ortega y Gasset suggested as a unit of analysis the idea of a generation, illustrated in a historical account of translating the Bible. Archer proposed as a mechanism for cultural change the idea of social morphogenesis, which this Element applies to evolving issues of race in the civic order. This process illustrated in the thinking of pundit William F. Buckley, Jr.

This book presents a series of fascinating investigations into the role that the imagination plays in studying and practicing leadership. It explains how using the imagination is integral to both the study and practice of leadership itself. Each study presented began as distinct and conceptually separable and is eloquently tied together by the author through the lens of imagination. This volume outlines the role of the imagination in understanding (a) one’s self, as well as other people, (b) the social groups to which one belongs, (c) the dynamics by which these groups change, (d) the conceptual structures we use to determine boundaries, and (e) the role of ritual ceremonies such as legislative committee hearings. In so doing, it offers novel insights that will encourage the reader to consider their own understanding and study of leadership. The Role of Imagination in Understanding Leadership will appeal to scholars and advanced students in the field of Leadership Studies, including graduate students studying leadership.

This thought-provoking book adopts a pluralistic framework to examine leadership and raises important questions about how leadership studies scholars see and do their work. This book begins with an interdisciplinary discussion of what a pluralistic mindset is – a distinct framework for acknowledging and managing a diversity of opinions while retaining an abiding faith in the merits of rigorous investigation. Nathan W. Harter argues that pluralism is an important consideration for leadership scholars, and threads this throughout a series of chapters that explore such topics as the proper duration of leadership episodes, the benefits of dedifferentiation in leadership, the importance of grievance as a motive, the prevalence of noise in decision-making, and the evolving utility of OODA loops. It concludes with a phenomenological experience in the spirit of Michel Serres that considers the role of leadership amid a welter of multiplicities. Throughout, readers are introduced to a number of scholars whose work is not often cited in leadership literature, including Julia Kristeva, Richard McKeon, Pierre Hadot, Eric Voegelin, and John Boyd.Bringing together important lessons and themes from literature, philosophy, and social science, this book offers a novel approach to leadership studies for advanced students and scholars.

This book offered an exploration of how scientific principles can illuminate and redefine leadership. It delves into the interdisciplinary nexus of leadership and the natural sciences, examining how concepts from physics, biology, and systems thinking can enrich our understanding of leadership. It begins by exploring the contributions of Michael Polanyi to leadership in the sciences and progresses to innovative metaphors like fluid dynamics and folding/unfolding to describe leadership phenomena. The book also investigates the role of boundaries—spatial, temporal, and conceptual—in leadership systems, drawing on examples from literature, such as The Wizard of Oz, to illustrate these ideas. Further, it ventures into altered states of consciousness, such as dreams and poetry, as sources of leadership insight, and culminates in a discussion of metaphysics and organizing principles grounded in multiplicity. With rigor and imagination, the book invites readers to consider leadership as both a scientific and philosophical phenomenon, offering examples, metaphors, and frameworks that challenge traditional disciplinary silos. It is intended for scholars, researchers, and advanced students in leadership studies, organizational psychology and social psychology.
