What if everything we see, experience, and understand is just an occasion for something deeper—an indication of a divine, underlying reality that governs all cause and effect?Occasionalism Revisited takes readers on a journey through one of the most fascinating theories of causality, where the only true causal agent is God, and all occurrences in the universe are but moments of divine creation. This expanded and updated second edition, edited by Nazif Muhtaro?lu, weaves together philosophical perspectives from both the Islamic and Western traditions, exploring the roots and contemporary expressions of occasionalism. From its origins in the works of Islamic scholars like the Ash'arites and Māturīdites, to its evolution in the thought of European philosophers such as Malebranche and Berkeley, this book bridges historical insights with contemporary philosophical inquiry. With contributions from leading scholars, Occasionalism Revisited explores how occasionalism has shaped discussions on causality, metaphysics, and theology across cultures and eras. It offers a rich analysis of how this intriguing doctrine intersects with current philosophical debates, making it an essential read for scholars and students alike who wish to uncover the deep interconnections between faith, reason, and the nature of reality. For those looking to outline courses on occasionalism or deepen their understanding of its evolution, this book also provides selected readings and a comprehensive timeline. Whether you are well-versed in the philosophy of causality or a newcomer to the subject, Occasionalism Revisited invites you to reconsider the very nature of how and why things happen.

This book presents the first English translation of Ali Sedad Bey’s pioneering 1883 treatise on thermodynamics, atomism and the emerging scientific worldview of the late Ottoman Empire. It represents a cornerstone in the intersection of 19th-century scientific advancements and Islamic philosophical thought. Originally written in Ottoman Turkish, it provides an unparalleled glimpse into the early introduction of thermodynamics, atomism, and Darwin's theory of natural selection to the Ottoman intellectual sphere. By exploring the scientific principles that dominated European thought and comparing them with Ashʿarite' metaphysics, Ali Sedad offers a detailed presentation and critical evaluation of these theories, underlining the compatibility between modern science and Islamic teachings. This book is not only a historical document but also a profound philosophical discourse on the nature of scientific inquiry and its metaphysical underpinnings. This edition includes a substantial introductory essay situating Ali Sedad within nineteenth‑century intellectual networks and scientific debates, and a comprehensive glossary of technical, theological, and philosophical terminology. Reclaiming a foundational but long‑overlooked text, this volume offers scholars of Islamic intellectual history, history of science, and science‑religion studies a rare window into how global scientific ideas were interpreted, contested, and transformed in a non‑Western context.

With some exceptions, there is not a real interest in Islamic philosophy and t- ology in Western institutions today. This largely ignored area has the potential to present enlightening insights into the development of the Western thought and to contribute to contemporary discussions in philosophy and theology in general. Scholars working in Islamic thought usually focus on its medieval background and consider it to be mainly of a historical interest and far away from the intellectual world of today. Showing its contemporary relevance is an important task by which the status of Islamic philosophy can be elevated to its proper station. By considering these points in mind, the University of Kentucky organized an international graduate student conference on Islamic philosophy and the- ogy with an emphasis on its contemporary relevance which was held between the 28th and 30th September 2007. This book emerged out of the conf- ence by adding more chapters relevant to the main theme of the book. This book presents analyses and discussions of different topics in Islamic philo- phy and theology by relating them to contemporary debates and ideas in four main areas: epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of religion and value t- ory. There are ten chapters in sum. Some of the chapters are written by graduate students and some of them by experienced scholars. Each chapter presents c- siderable insight into its relevant topic but does not represent the opinion of anybody except the author.

The contributions, composed in this volume, are inspired not only by the necessity but also by the potentialities of a process which continues and deepens cross-cultural understanding, especially between Islamic and Western philosophy. Following the tradition of an East-Western symphony of thoughts, the authors focus on common horizons and while applying comparative and historical approaches, varieties of unity appear on the ways towards a New Enlightenment. The creative force, orchestrating the harmony in the web of Life, communicates in the mean time with the capacities of human beings, advancing in deciphering its micro-macrocosmic dimensions. Here, the encounter of the Logos of Life Philosophy (A-T. Tymieniecka) and Islamic Philosophy open the space for constructive disputation. In the wake of the crisis of postmodern unknowability, paths towards a new critique of reason go hand in hand with fundamental issues, being reflected newly.
