This book aims at investigating the pacific use of nuclear techniques to evaluate, measure, and mitigate marine-related environmental issues. In recent decades, the use of nuclear techniques has grown mainly to define and assess the pollution levels in the marine environment. The pacific use of nuclear approaches allows a better understanding and assessment of pollution in coastal and marine ecosystems. The evaluation of pollution levels will not allow for identifying the possible sources of pollutants in an ecosystem, yet the use of nuclear approaches has allowed for establishing the history of pollution in a system. So, since 70's researchers have started reconstructing marine and coastal pollution history using sediment cores by applying radiometric-dating tools. In addition, nuclear techniques are also used for other emergent pollutants, such as marine plastics, and for determining carbon sequestration rates. Nuclear and isotopic techniques are also used to accurately determine and trace oil spills in marine environments, which help in mitigating possible damage and evaluating the risk to human health. Monitoring and mitigating ocean acidification is also possible using nuclear techniques, which contribute to the understanding of the past and present changes in ocean conditions, mainly seawater pH. This book is intended as a valuable resource for researchers, scientists and policymakers who are looking to understand the source and origin of pollution in order to provide accurate solutions and mitigations. Thus, worldwide research activities on marine and coastal stressors continue to develop, there is a clear need for effective global scientific cooperation that includes the use of these nuclear tools.
Integrated Approaches to Water, Energy, and Sustainable Development in Morocco

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the interconnection between water resources, agriculture, and other industrial sectors, along with an exploration of the importance of new alternatives for natural resource conservation and protection, such as waste valorization and its conversion into eco-friendly products, and renewable energy as a solution to climate change. At the same time, it highlights the necessity of civic engagement in tackling these challenges. It is structured into four main sections that address critical challenges and solutions in the field. The first section focuses on water resources and ecosystems, from coastlines to inland valleys, where the first section investigates how natural factors and human activities affect water quality, availability, and sustainability. Through various case studies, the book highlights the complex relationship between water quality and coastal environments. The second section analyses the conversion of environmental challenges into ecological solutions through resource and waste valorization. This section outlines a clear vision for valorizing Morocco’s natural resources (such as phosphate and oil shale) to address agricultural, industrial, and environmental challenges within a sustainable growth framework. The third section investigates the relationship between urban development and land use changes using GIS and remote sensing methods, which are influencing agricultural lands. This part explores the roles of societal behavior and ecological engagement in shaping the path toward sustainability in Morocco. This section presents integrated insights into the importance of civic engagement, social behavior, and dynamics in promoting inclusive and sustainable environmental governance. The fourth section emphasizes hydrogen as an emerging sector and a cornerstone of Morocco's sustainable energy transition, as well as its growing role in global decarbonization efforts. This part of the book emphasizes the role that green hydrogen may play as a clean energy source in mitigating climate and supporting long-term societal, economic, and environmental sustainability. At the same time, it underscores the importance of strategic planning, technological innovation, and international collaboration in positioning Morocco as a key actor in the global green hydrogen transition. This book serves as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners seeking innovative solutions to sustainable water resource management, waste valorization, and enhanced energy security amid growing environmental challenges.

This volume presents biogeochemical research linked to climate change, soil and water acidification, and ecosystem eutrophication, highlighting the impact of human activities on biogeochemical cycles in coastal ecosystems. As human activities increasingly reshape these cycles, many scientists now refer to 'anthropo-biogeochemical cycles' to underscore this influence. Transitional Water Systems (TWS), such as estuaries and lagoons that connect marine and freshwater environments, are especially sensitive to these impacts. Unplanned coastal development disrupts natural processes leading to erosion, habitat loss and ecological degradation. Such development also alters river flows, impacting sediment transport and the migration patterns of aquatic species. Additionally, land-use changes from agriculture, mining, and urbanization contribute to soil erosion and sediment accumulation, affecting both downstream and coastal regions. The book covers these activities and their impacts, and provides recommendations for how effective and sustainable coastal ecosystem management can be achieved through policy recommendations and conservation strategies using integrative modeling and predictive approaches. The primary audience for this book includes academics specializing in climate and environmental studies. Research professionals will also benefit from this comprehensive volume, which consolidates findings on various aspects of marine biogeochemical cycles and the impacts of anthropogenic activities.
