This volume coherently present 24 thoroughly revised full papers accepted for the ECAI-94 Workshop on Agent Theories, Architectures, and Languages. There is currently considerable interest, from both the AI and the mainstream CS communities, in conceptualizing and building complex computer systems as collections of intelligent agents. This book is devoted to theoretical and practical aspects of architectural and language-related design and implementation issues of software agents. Particularly interesting is the comprehensive survey by the volume editors, which outlines the key issues and indicates, via a comprehensive bibliography, topics for further reading. In addition, a glossary of key terms in this emerging field and a comprehensive subject index is included.

Intelligent agents are computer systems that are capable of flexible autonomous action in dynamic, typically multi-agent domains. Over the past few years, the computer science community has begun to recognise that the technology of intelligent agents provides the key to solving a range of complex software application problems, for which traditional software engineering tools and techniques offer no solution. This book, the third in a series, represents the state of the art in the science of agent systems. It is based on papers presented at the 3rd workshop on Agent Theories, Architectures and Languages (ATAL'96), held in conjunction with the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI'96) in Budapest, Hungary, in August 1996. It is essential reading for anyone interested in this vital new technology.

Agents represent an exciting and promising new approach to building a wide range of software applications. Agents are autonomous problem-solving entities that are able to flexibly solve problems in complex, dynamic environments, without receiving permanent guidance from the user.Agent Technology: Foundations, Applications and Markets is the first book to provide an integrative presentation of the issues, challenges and success of designing, building and using agent applications. The chapters presented are written by internationally leading authorities in the field. The book provides, for a general audience, a unique overview on agent technology applications, ranging from an introduction to the technical foundations to reports on dealing with specific agent systems in practice.
Intelligent Agents VI. Agent Theories, Architectures, and Languages
6th International Workshop, ATAL'99 Orlando, Florida, USA, July 15-17, 1999 Proceedings

This book is the sixth in the successful line of Intelligent Agents volumes published in LNAI. It is based on the sixth workshop on Agent Technologies, Architectures, and Languages, ATAL'99, held in Orlando, Florida, USA in July 1999. The 27 revised full papers included were selected from a total of 75 submissions during two rounds of reviewing. Also included are an introduction by the volume editors and a subject index. The book is divided into topical sections on agent theories, agent and system architectures, agent languages, agent oriented software engineering, and decision making in a social context. This state-of-the-art survey is essential reading for anyone interested in agent technology.

Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) is a vibrant sub-field of Artificial Intelligence concerned with coordinating the knowledge and actions of multiple interacting agents. Although DAI has the potential to overcome many of the problems currently associated with constructing software systems which are large, complex and knowledge rich, there have, as yet, been relatively few attempts to apply it to real world applications. To help pave the way for such future developments, this book recounts the insights gained and the breakthroughs made, whilst building multiple agent systems in the domains of electricity transportation management and control of a particle accelerator. These experiences cover the complete development lifecycle of multi-agent systems for industrial applications: ranging from the initial design, through the implementation, to the testing and evaluation phases. The book's other main features are that it: provides a thorough and up-to-date explanation of the foundation concepts of DAI, describes a new paradigm for building multi-agent systems which uses the concept of reusable cooperation knowledge and develops a new model of cooperation based on the notion of joint intentions.
