Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Musicology - Popular music, grade: 1,3, University of Bonn (Institut fur Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie), course: The 19th-Century novel and its Impact on Popular Culture, language: English, abstract: Bridget Jones's Diary is a popular adaption and both, novel and movie, have a strong noticeable atmosphere. But does this atmosphere differ or does the soundtrack support the atmosphere of the novel completely? To find an answer to these questions I will first prove the effect of music. Therefore, I will take a scene out of the movie and alter the music to create a different atmosphere and following, a different meaning. Next, I am going to analyse the introduction of the movie in respect of music. I will divide the beginning of the movie into two diverse parts. In the first one the music is played as background music and only subconsciously audible. In the second part it leads the action completely. Finally, an analysis of the beginning of the novel will be made. Here I am going to analyse the atmosphere chronologically and afterwards thematic with the help of an article by the famous writer Esther Newton.

The first chapters of this paper try to recapitulate the development of expatriation to Paris. What were the reasons for people, especially artists, to move to the European city and how did Hemingway himself find his way to Paris?Furthermore, this paper wants to show how Hemingway represents the city in his writings. Three different genres will be discussed throughout the analysis to create a balanced overview of the representation of Paris. Hemingway s debut novel "e;The Sun Also Rises"e; shows Paris in Hemingway s fiction. The author s memoir "e;A Moveable Feast"e; offers a more psychological approach to Paris, whereas a selection of his articles for the Toronto "e;Star"e; work as a realistic documentation of life in Paris. What are the differences of the portrayal of Paris in these genres? Is his passion towards the city visible in every work? This paper will also try to answer the question whether Hemingway represents the whole city of Paris or if the author emphasizes on the parts of Paris dominated by the American expatriates, which were mostly on the Left Bank of the Seine.

Male dominance and supremacy are visible throughout the whole novel, just as the subordination and discrimination of the female gender. Moreover, the novel depicts numerous gender stereotypes, which will be analysed in this paper to achieve a better understanding of the gender ideologies in Achebe's society. Strong gender roles can be seen in various situations in the life of Okonkwo, which is why this paper is going to be focussed on different aspects in the life of the protagonist of the novel. Beside the question whether "e;Things Fall Apart"e; portrays strong masculine dominance, the following questions will be answered: Are there differences in the various spaces regarding gender roles in the novel? Is there an aspect in Ibo's society in which the subordination of women is broken? These questions allow the paper to take female rebellion into consideration and to keep the analysis open to a variety of readings of the novel without purely focussing on the reader's first impression of the dominance of manhood.

The Green Knight is a dangerous and powerful character in the beginning of the plot. He sets the happenings in motion and is the reason for Gawain's journey. However, the Green Knight is uncovered to not be the main villain of the story. Therefore, there must be hints at his weakness and vulnerability throughout the plot, just as the depiction of magical elements. The same applies to the movie adaptation Sword of the Valiant directed by Stephen Weeks. Although Weeks' adaptation shows clear alterations to the poem, the beginning and the ending of the plots can still be compared. As for the beginning, in both versions the Green Knight enters the Arthurian court and explains his errand. Towards the end, both versions of Gawain find themselves in the Green Chapel. Thus, these two scenes are comparable. This paper aims at answering the question whether the representation of the Green Knight in the original poem corresponds to the movie Sword of the Valiant. Moreover, this paper is going to focus on the aspect of vulnerability and magical elements. Thus, the following questions will be answered: How is vulnerability portrayed in contrast to each other, and in how far is magic emphasized through the depiction of the Green Knight?

Every human being gets confronted with gender stereotypes in an everyday life. May it be at work, in school, in sports or politics. In addition, everyone generally knows what a stereotype is and what kind of stereotypes do apply for men and women: short hair versus long hair, trousers versus dresses, playing football versus cooking, et cetera. This paper aims at explaining what stereotypes are, in how far they are traceable in Shakespeare's "e;The Taming of the Shrew"e; and moreover taking an outlook on why it is important to talk about stereotypes nowadays. Shakespeare s "e;The Taming of the Shrew"e; is considered as his most controversial play. It represents a violent patriarchy with weak and obedient women and numerous stereotypical characters regarding female and male ones. Furthermore, the play faced a lot of critics over time. Especially the feminist movement tears the play apart and speaks almost solely negatively of it. Nevertheless, the Royal Shakespeare Company dared to perform a new production of the play this year. Justin Audibert turned the play around by doing a gender swap. A gender swap comes along with breaking stereotypes, as women become men and vice versa. More precisely, the first chapter of this paper discusses the general topic of stereotypes. It offers a definition of the term, examples as well as a short introduction into current issues around stereotypes. After discussing what stereotypes are in general, the second chapter demonstrates those in Shakespeare s play itself. It is divided into three topics: society, manhood and womanhood. Talking about "e;The Taming of the Shrew"e; s society will answer the question if its context already hints at stereotypes. The differentiation of male and female stereotypes strengthens the importance of gender in the play. In how far is gender a topic in "e;The Taming of the Shrew"e;? Are there exceptions to be made or is every character clearly to be categorized? Lastly, a look on this year s Royal Shakespeare Company production of the play offers an outlook on the current situation of the perception of stereotypes. Is it still a topic worth to consider and do stereotypes still exist in our society? Furthermore, the chapter answers the question in how far Audibert s gender swap worked.
