This book contains a collection of cutting-edge papers on methodological aspects of prosody research. Current approaches to the gathering, treatment, and interpretation of prosodic data are discussed by experts in the field, illustrated by their own empirical research. Contributions focus on the choice and measurement of prosodic parameters, the establishment of prosodic categories, annotation structures for spoken-language data, and experimental methods for production and perception studies (including the construction of materials, modes of presentation, online vs. offline tasks, judgement scales, data processing, and statistical evaluation). The volume will serve as a handbook linking data collection and interpretation, allowing researchers in linguistics and related fields to make more informed decisions concerning their empirical work in prosody.

The volume Urban Voices presents studies, analysing how speakers of Russian convey social meanings across a variety of speech situations. Rooted in quantitative and qualitative methodological frameworks, the contributions show how various linguistic, paralinguistic and pragmatic means relate to sociolinguistic dimensions (e.g. display the social, ethnic, local identity of a speaker, the institutional character of a communicative situation). The analyses are the results of the research network Urban Voices, which focuses on the sociolinguistics, grammar and pragmatics of spoken Russian and investigates its linguistic and communicative diversity. The book focuses on event boundedness which can be expressed in the aspectual distinction (perfective and imperfective) and on kinesthetic level between gestures that include one or several energy impulses (bounded) and smooth gestures (unbounded). The correlation of verbal and gestural expression of event boundedness is studied on the basis of oral narratives produced by Russian L1, French L1 and (Russians as) French L2 speakers. The results reveal differences in event construal in multimodal terms by speakers of different languages. Overall, the book gives insight into not only the category of aspect, but also the ways in which it is realized in spontaneous oral narratives, and more generally: event construal on the verbal and gestural levels.
