"Whereas the centrality of femininity to nineteenth-century French fiction has been the focus of widespread critical attention, masculinity has, until recently, received little sustained treatment in either the literary or socio-historical domains. In this book, Nigel Harkness uses the fiction of George Sand (1804-1876), the pre-eminent woman writer of the period, to explore questions of masculinity as they pertain to the nineteenth-century French novel, and to map out new approaches to the study of literary masculinity. Drawing on contemporary theories of gender and narrative, Harkness reveals how Sands novels repeatedly focus on a nexus of language, masculinity and power, in which narrative is both a vehicle for the expression of manhood, and a site where masculinity is discursively performed. Masculinity is thus reconfigured in Sands fiction as an identity constituted as much through words as through actions. Analysis of the performances of masculinity staged in Sands novels opens onto an exploration of gendered processes of literary representation: the links between masculinity and the doxa, the equation of writing and power, the homosocial function of acts of narration, and the masculinity of authorship and authority."

L’œuvre littéraire de George Sand entretient un dialogue multiple, manifeste et soutenu avec d’autres auteurs et d’autres textes. Ce dialogue, engagé surtout avec des prédécesseurs et des contemporains tels que Rousseau, Shakespeare, Goethe, Mme de Genlis, Balzac et Flaubert, n’est pas uniquement textuel ; il est aussi idéologique. Les essais contenus dans ce volume poursuivent les réflexions entamées dans George Sand : Intertexualité et Polyphonie I. Là où le premier volume a mis en valeur la polysémie intertextuelle du roman sandien, les articles réunis dans ce volume soulignent la centralité du dialogue et du dialogisme, de l’interdiscursivité, de la voix, de la musique et des arts visuels dans une écriture sandienne caractérisée par la pluralité. Si les connotations musicales de la polyphonie s’avèrent particulièrement pertinentes pour une lecture de l’œuvre sandienne, le concept souligne aussi l’importance de la voix, de l’échange et du dialogue. En effet, le dialogue se révèle être un élément-clé : pour Sand, l’écriture est toujours une réécriture impliquant un engagement avec l’autre ; l’oralité n’est pas uniquement une caractéristique de ses romans champêtres, qui participent à la tradition du conte oral, mais elle sous-tend la totalité d’une œuvre où la question ‘qui parle ?’ ne peut jamais être négligée ; et le concept de l’échange n’est pas limité au domaine de la politique, mais se manifeste aussi dans l’œuvre fictive où le théâtre, la musique et les arts visuels occupent une position prééminente. Dans les dix-neuf articles sélectionnés ici – dont six en anglais – des spécialistes internationaux de George Sand analysent et répondent à ces questions en prenant en compte la diversité de l’œuvre sandienne (romans, autobiographie, théâtre et correspondance).

This volume draws contributors from around the globe who represent the full range of approaches to scholarship in nineteenth-century French studies: historical, literary, cultural, art historical, philosophical, and comparative. The theme of the volume – Birth and Death – is one with particular resonance for nineteenth-century French studies, since the nineteenth century is commonly perceived as an age of new life and renovation. It is the epoch that witnessed an efflorescence of industrial and artistic progress, the birth of the individual and the birth of the novel, and the creation of an urban population in the major demographic shift from the rural provinces to Paris. At the same time, however, it is the century of Decadence and degeneration theory, marked by a prominent morbid aesthetic in the artistic sphere and a fascination with criminality, moral decay and the pathologization of racial and sexual minorities in the scientific discourses. It is also the century in which reflection on processes of artistic creation begins to problematize concepts of mimetic representation, the function of the author and the status of the text. In the context of the dialectical quality of nineteenth-century French culture, caught between an obsession with the new and innovative and a paranoid sense of its own encroaching decay, the twin themes of birth and death open onto a variety of issues – literary, social, historical, artistic – which are explored, interrogated and reassessed in the essays contained in this volume.
