After the Public Heath Acts of 1872 and 1875, British local authorities bore statutory obligations to carry out sanitary improvements. Richardson explores public health strategy and central-local government relations during the mid-nineteenth-century, using the experience of Uppingham, England, as a micro-historical case study. Uppingham is a small (and unusually well-documented) market town which contains a boarding school. Despite legal changes enforcing sanitary reform, the town was hit three times by typhoid in 1875–1876. Richardson examines the conduct of those involved in town and school, the economic dependence of the former on the latter, and the opposition to higher rates to pay for sanitary improvement by a local ratepayer "shopocracy." He compares the sanitary state of the community with others nearby, and Uppingham School with comparable schools of that era. Improvement was often determined by business considerations rather than medical judgments, and local personalities and events frequently drove national policy in practice. This study illuminates wider themes in Victorian public medicine, including the difficulty of diagnosing typhoid before breakthroughs in bacteriological research, the problems local officialdom faced in implementing reform, and the length of time it took London ideas and practice to filter into rural areas.

The Airbus A350 is a twin-engine, long-range, wide-body airliner, which was launched in 2006, partly in response to Boeing’s development of the 787 Dreamliner. It is available in two variants: A350-900 and A350-1000. Over 70 per cent of the airframe is constructed from carbon composites and aluminium alloys leading to a light structure which, when combined with the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent XWB turbofans, has resulted in an aircraft with 25 per cent lower operating costs and a significant reduction in fuel burn and carbon dioxide emissions. The A350-900 first flew in June 2013 and entered service less than two years later. The stretched A350-1000 made its maiden flight in November 2016 and began commercial flights in February 2018. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a family of long-range, mid-size, wide-body, twin-engine jet airliners that can carry 242–330 passengers in two classes. The airliner features a high degree of technological innovation in design concepts, construction materials and control systems. It is the world’s first major commercial airliner to have a fuselage, wings and tail made from composite materials. The airliner makes extensive use of electrical systems in place of many pneumatic components. It has an advanced fly-by-wire control system which automatically optimises the shape of the wing resulting in improved lift and reduced fuel consumption, and new technologies are used for the flight deck instrumentation. The aircraft is powered by next-generation engines: General Electric GEnx 1B or the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000. Three variants have been built: the initial 787-8, a stretched 787 9 variant and the largest variant, the 787-10. The 787 first entered service with ANA on 26 October 2011. The 737 MAX represents the fourth generation of the Boeing 737, following on from the 737NG Series. It was developed in response to a decision by Airbus to improve and re-engine its A320 family. Key to the development of the 737 MAX was the more efficient CFM LEAP-1B engine, which promised improvements in fuel consumption and operating costs. The 737 MAX is offered in four variants and the first flight of the MAX Series involved a MAX 8 on 29 January 2016, and entered into service on 22 May 2017 with Malindo Air. By the end of 2018, 4,300 aircraft had been ordered by 95 airlines. However, two fatal incidents involving MAX 8 aircraft occurred in 2018 and 2019, leading to a worldwide grounding of all MAX aircraft from March 2019 to November 2020, and the cancellation of many orders. The main cause of the crashes was a malfunctioning automated flight control system called MCAS (Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System). Four key design changes to the 737 MAX and airline training programmes were required to address the safety issues that resulted in the crashes, before the MAX was recertified and cleared to return to service on 18 November 2020.
