The Arctic's environment, economics and politics are changing rapidly, and the conflicting interests among stakeholders mean that it lacks sustainable political and military cooperation. States bordering the Arctic — Russia, Canada, the United States, and the Nordic countries — as well as those further afield — such as China and Japan — all recognize the economic benefits of the region, but struggle to address the security challenges and the potential environmental impact of activities conducted there. This book provides a snapshot of the subject areas connecting transport, environmental security, resource development, and military security, featuring new material written after Russia's second invasion of Ukraine.

Sino-Japanese relations have been on the mend since Shinzo Abe assumed the Japanese Prime Minister's office in September 2006. His visit to China in October 2006 and the reciprocal visits of Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao in April 2007, and President Hu Jintao in May 2008, facilitated the further thawing of bilateral relations under the framework of “mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic relationship.” A substantial number of additional events have indicated the continuation of the positive trend in the strengthening of the bilateral relations. However, several issues continue to obstruct the building of long-term confidence between the two Asian giants. Despite the overall improved relations, there is very little structural thinking about how to move the Sino-Japanese relations to the next level and how to institutionalize security dialogues at the regional and international level. This book provides an overview of the current situation and also gives suggestions on what is needed to move beyond the haphazard level of cooperation in Northeast Asia, especially as the six-party talks seem to have broken down. It focuses on Chinese and Japanese perceptions of the bilateral situation, and the potential of, and need for, multilateral structures in managing the future.

East Asia's Security Cooperation: Walk the Walk and Talk the Talk will enhance readers' understanding of the security cooperation in East Asia and its sub-regions of Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia, with a focus on how this impacts the intra-regional and extra-regional security.Security cooperation has been lagging behind cooperation in general, at present, to such a large extent that it threatens economic and political cooperation. Based on a large array of interviews and information from a vast network of military and security staff all over Asia, this book takes a close look at the policies involved in security cooperation. It highlights the deficits of regional structures and offers practical advice on improving cooperation, evaluating the impact of such efforts over time. Readers seeking deeper insights into how regional security cooperation could be structured and implemented will find this volume invaluable.
