Algorithms in algebraic geometry go hand in hand with software packages that implement them. Together they have established the modern field of computational algebraic geometry which has come to play a major role in both theoretical advances and applications. Over the past fifteen years, several excellent general purpose packages for computations in algebraic geometry have been developed, such as, CoCoA, Singular and Macaulay 2. While these packages evolve continuously, incorporating new mathematical advances, they both motivate and demand the creation of new mathematics and smarter algorithms. This volume reflects the workshop “Software for Algebraic Geometry” held in the week from 23 to 27 October 2006, as the second workshop in the thematic year on Applications of Algebraic Geometry at the IMA. The papers in this volume describe the software packages Bertini, PHClab, Gfan, DEMiCs, SYNAPS, TrIm, Gambit, ApaTools, and the application of Risa/Asir to a conjecture on multiple zeta values. They offer the reader a broad view of current trends in computational algebraic geometry through software development and applications.

In many fields of modern mathematics specialised scientific software becomes increasingly important. Hence, tremendous effort is taken by numerous groups all over the world to develop appropriate solutions. This book contains surveys and research papers on mathematical software and algorithms. The common thread is that the field of mathematical applications lies on the border between algebra and geometry. Topics include polyhedral geometry, elimination theory, algebraic surfaces, Grobner bases, triangulations of point sets and the mutual relationship. This diversity is accompanied by the abundance of available software systems which often handle only special mathematical aspects. Therefore the volume's other focus is on solutions towards the integration of mathematical software systems. This includes low-level and XML based high-level communication channels as well as general framework for modular systems.

This volume contains the outstanding collection of invited papers and refereed papers selected for the Second International Congress on Mathematical Software, ICMS 2006, held in Castro Urdiales, Spain, September 1-3, 2006. We cordially invite you to visit the ICMS 2006 website http://www.icms2006.unican.es where you can find all relevant information about this interesting event. ICMS 2006 was the second edition of this congress, which follows up the successful ICMS 2002 held in Beijing, China. Since its inception, this congress has been a satellite event of the International Congress of Mathematicians - ICM, the world’s largest conference on mathematics, celebrated every four years since the edition of 1900 in Paris, where David Hilbert presented his 23 famous problems. For the first time, this 2006 edition of ICM is held in Spain (see: http://www.icm2006.org for details), and so is ICMS 2006. This congress was devoted to all aspects of mathematical software, whose appearance is — in our opinion — one of the most important events in mathematics. Mathematical software systems are used to construct examples, to prove theorems, and to find new mathematical phenomena. Conversely, mathematical research often motivates developments of new algorithms and new systems. Beyond mathematics, mathematical software systems are becoming indispensable tools in many branches of science and technology.

In recent years, new algorithms for dealing with rings of differential operators have been discovered and implemented. A main tool is the theory of Grobner bases, which is reexamined here from the point of view of geometric deformations. Perturbation techniques have a long tradition in analysis; Grobner deformations of left ideals in the Weyl algebra are the algebraic analogue to classical perturbation techniques. The algorithmic methods introduced here are particularly useful for studying the systems of multidimensional hypergeometric PDEs introduced by Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. The Grobner deformation of these GKZ hypergeometric systems reduces problems concerning hypergeometric functions to questions about commutative monomial ideals, and leads to an unexpected interplay between analysis and combinatorics. This book contains a number of original research results on holonomic systems and hypergeometric functions, and raises many open problems for future research in this area.

The ICMS Developer's Meeting is an international congress for which the main theme is mathematical software. The 2010 meeting was the third of a series of meetings of similar theme, the ?rst being held in Beijing, China in 2002,and the second in Castro-Urdiales, Spain in 2006. The ?eld of mathematics has numerous branches, and in each branch we ?nd that algorithms, and also implementations and applications of software s- tems, are studied. Researchers who endeavor to make such studies also have international meetings within their speci?c branches of mathematics, and these meetings have made signi?cant contributions to the ?elds in which they lie. The ICMS (International Congresseson Mathematical Software), on the other hand, is a general (not branch speci?c) meeting on mathematical software, which is held every four years, and is a rare opportunity for developers of mathematical softwarefrom di?erent branchesof mathematics, as well as mathematicians who are interested in mathematical software, to gather together.

The advent of mathematical software has been one of the most important events in mathematics. Mathematical software systems are used to construct examples, to prove theorems, and to find new mathematical phenomena. On the other hand, mathematical research often motivates developments of new algorithms and new systems. This volume contains the papers presented at the First International Congress of Mathematical Software, which aimed at a coherent study of mathematical software systems from a wide variety of branches of mathematics. The book discusses more than one hundred mathematical software systems. Readers can get an overview of the current status of the arts of mathematical software and algorithms. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: • Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)
