The Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA) conferences have established themselves as a platform for bringing together researchers and practitioners from various backgrounds and all regions of the world to exchange ideas, experiences and opinions in a friendly and stimulating environment. The papers presented at the conference represent recent developments in the field and important steps towards shaping the future of applied computer science and information systems. DEXA covers a broad field: all aspects of databases, knowledge based systems, knowledge management, web-based systems, information systems, related technologies and their applications. Once again there were a good number of submissions: out of 183 papers that were submitted, the program committee selected 92 to be presented. In the first year of this new millennium DEXA has come back to the United Kingdom, following events in Vienna, Berlin, Valencia, Prague, Athens, London, Zurich, Toulouse, Vienna and Florence. The past decade has seen several revolutionary developments, one of which was the explosion of Internet-related applications in the areas covered by DEXA, developments in which DEXA has played a role and in which DEXA will continue to play a role in its second decade, starting with this conference.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications, DEXA '95, held in London, UK in September 1995. The 60 full revised papers presented in the volume were carefully selected from a total of almost 200 submissions and give a comprehensive view over advanced applications of information systems. Among the topics covered are object-oriented databases, advanced database applications, parallel and distributed systems, object-oriented modeling, information retrieval, theoretical aspects, extended relational databases, expert and knowledge-based systems, and physical aspects.

The annual international conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA) is now well established as a reference scientific event. The reader will find in this volume a collection of scientific papers that represent the state of the art of - search in the domain of data, information and knowledge management, intelligent systems, and their applications. The 18th instance of the series of DEXA conferences was held at the University of Regensburg, Germany, September 3–7, 2007. Several collocated conferences and workshops covered specialized and comp- mentary topics to the main conference topic. Six conferences—the Eighth Inter- tional Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK), the Seventh International Conference on Electronic Commerce and Web Technologies (EC-Web), the Fifth International Conference on Electronic Government (EGOV), the 3rd International Conference on Trust, Privacy, and Security in Digital Business (TrustBus), the 3rd International Conference on Industrial Applications of Holonic and Multi-Agent Systems (HoloMAS), and the 1st International Conference on N- work-Based Information Systems (NBiS)—and 19 workshops were collocated with DEXA. The conference is a unique international event with a balanced depth and breadth of topics. Its much appreciated conviviality fosters unmatched opportunities to meet, share the latest scientific results and discuss the latest technological advances in the area of information technologies with young scientists and engineers as well as senior world-renown experts.
