During the past ten years a variety of methods involving mass spectrom­ etry have been developed for the analysis of environmentally important compounds. Much has been accomplished in that period to solve some of the important problems in the field. Growth of this methodology and its accomplishments has reached the point where an individual scientist can no longer have an in-depth knowledge of all the areas involved. We have attempted to provide this in-depth picture to those scientists con­ cerned by having the important topics treated by experts in the subject matter. In order to provide all the relevant material in one volume we begin with the general topics which provide the basic background material necessary to understand the techniques discussed in the in-depth topics. These general chapters are kept brief, containing only the essentials needed by the working scientist to deal with the practical applications. References in these chapters are chosen to permit a more complete study of each chapter. The concept for this book was developed during the activities of two of the editors under a NATO travel grant. These editors gratefully acknowledge this support which made the initial planning of this book possible. The editors would like to thank the individual authors of each chap­ ter for their cooperation and generously giving of their time for this project.

Aquatic Pollutants: Transformation and Biological Effects contains the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Aquatic Pollutants held at Noordwijkerhout (Amsterdam), The Netherlands on September 26-28, 1977. Organized into 47 chapters, this book first describes the aquatic pollutants and their potential biological effects. Subsequent chapters elucidate chemicals with pollution potential; multidetection approach to analysis of organic pollutants in water; volatilization of pollutants from water; microbial transformations of aromatic pollutants; and photochemical transformation of pollutants in water. Other chapters address oxidation of organic compounds in aquatic systems; laboratory microcosms for use in determining pollutant stress; continuous biomonitoring systems for detection of toxic levels of water pollutants; and health aspects of water recycling practices. This book will be useful as a review of existing knowledge in this field. It will also stimulate further thought and research.

Environmental Science, Volume 2: Sensory Assessment of Water Quality presents the methods for sensory water quality assessment. This book discusses the various aspects of the problem of impaired taste and odor of water. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the significance attributed to sensory assessment of water quality. This text then examines the results obtained on sensory water quality assessment and on general water quality appraisal. Other chapters describe the 20 types of drinking water and consider the effects of the sensory water quality assessment factors on water consumption. This book discusses as well the types of chemical compounds present and their relation to water taste. The final chapter deals with the number of applications and recommendations to assess sensory water quality aspects at least weekly in the case of surface water supplies by making an inquiry among the consumers located in the area served. This book is a valuable resource for chemists.

Analytical Techniques in Environmental Chemistry contains the Proceedings of the International Congress held at Barcelona, Spain in November 1978. Separating 60 papers of the Congress as chapters, this book begins with a description of the natural and pollutant organic compounds in contemporary aquatic environments; recognition of the sources of isoprenoid alkanes in recent environments; and patterns of hydrocarbon contamination in California coastal waters. Other topics discuss include determination of trace level hydrocarbons in marine biota; recent progress in polycyclic aromatic chemistry and its significance for environmental chemistry; profiles of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in suspended particles; and chemical carcinogenesis.

The complex multidisciplinary problem posed by PCDD can best be understood by the interaction of scientists from different disciplines. This workshop was organised to allow scientific exchange by such experts.
