What is at stake is a recognition of peacebuilding's everyday political, social, economic, and cultural dynamics. This indicates the emergence of a post-liberal form of peace.

This study explores three generations of approaches to ending conflict in the context of the failings of the Westphalian international system; their peacekeeping, mediation and negotiation, conflict resolution and peacebuilding approaches as well as UN peace operations. It asks, via an empirical and theoretical analysis, what role such approaches have played and are playing in replicating an international system prone to intractable forms of conflict.

The United Nations has rarely been given a fair hearing with regard to its work in Cyprus. Despite competing demands for its limited resources being challenged by the local parties and at the mercy of contradictory political directions at the international level, the UN has actually achieved more than is generally realized.

This volume highlights and analyzes the changing peace and security challenges faced by the United Nations in an evolving international environment that is no longer solely characterized by states and inter-state security.
