Die Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI) zeichnet jedes Jahr eine Informatikdissertation durch einen Preis aus. Die Auswahl dieser Dissertation stutzt sich auf die von den Universitaten und Hochschulen fur diesen Preis vorgeschlagenen Dissertationen. Somit sind die Teilnehmer an dem Auswahlverfahren der GI bereits als "Preistrager" ihrer Hochschule ausgezeichnet.

The efficient management of geometric data, such as points, curves, or polyhedra in arbitrary dimensions, is of great importance in many complex database applications like CAD/CAM, robotics, or computer vision. To provide optimal support for geometric operations, it is crucial to choose efficient data representation schemes. The first part of this book contains a taxonomy and critical survey of common operations and representation schemes for geometric data. Then several new schemes for the efficient support of set operations (union, intersection) and search operations (point location, range search) are presented.

The most recent developments in spatial data management are reported in these proceedings. SSD '89 brought together computer scientists and experts from application areas such as geography, computer vision, robotics, computer-aided manufacturing, and environmental information systems. This proceedings volume includes subjects such as extensible database systems, spatial data structures an index structures, spatial reasoning, geographic information systems, quadtrees, and thematic map modeling.

Spatial database management has become an important subarea of current database research. Research in this area is often characterized by interdisciplinary cooperation: computer scientists work with geographers and environmental scientists to provide better access to spatial databases of steadily increasing size. After the First Symposium on Large Spatial Databases (SSD '89) was held in Santa Barbara, California, in 1989 (and its proceedings published as Volume 409 of this series), a second symposium (SSD'91) was held in Zurich, Switzerland. This proceedings volume contains the papers presented at SSD '91. Topics include spatial data models and access methods, performance studies, geometric algorithms, spatial query languages and user interfaces, geographic information systems, and object-oriented techniques.

Umweltrelevante Daten heben sich durch eine Reihe zentraler Charakteristika von Daten aus konventionellen Informatikanwendungen ab. So sind Umweltdaten in vielen F{llen geokodiert, d.h. Informationen sind einem gewissen Punkt oder einem gewissen Bereich des Raumes zugeordnet. H{ufigsind die Datenobjekte auch mehrdimensional und m}ssen mit Hilfe komplexer geometrischer Objekte repr{sentiert werden. Schlie~lich spielt auch die Verarbeitung von statistischen Daten und Methoden sowie von unsicherem Wissen in der Umweltinformatik eine wichtige Rolle. Aus diesen Charakteristika ergeben sich unterschiedliche Anforderungen an die Informationsverarbeitung; insbesondere empfiehlt sich die Einbeziehung von r{umlichen Datenbanken sowie von modernen Geoinformationssystemen und wissensbasierten Systemen. Wer Umweltpolitik betreibt, ben|tigt schnell umfassende und klare Informationen: Umweltinformation erm|glicht Umweltvorsorge. Da solche Information nur mit Computerhilfe verf}gbar gemacht werden kann, arbeitet das Land Baden-W}rttemberg zur Zeit am Aufbau eines Umweltinformationssystems (UIS), wobei viele der angesprochenen Problemkreise ber}hrt werden.Hierbei findet auch eine gute Zusammenarbeit mit dem Forschungsinstitut f}r Anwendungsorientierte Wissensverarbeitung (FAW) in Ulm statt. In diesem Rahmen hat im Oktober 1990 auf Schlo~ Reisensburg bei G}nzburg ein mehrt{giger Workshop zum Thema "Umweltinformatik" stattgefunden. ]ber 70 eingeladene Fachleute aus dem In- und Ausland, sowohl aus dem Umfeld der Wissenschaft wie dem der Anwendung, diskutierten in einem interdisziplin{ren Kreis, wie Informatikmethoden f}r den Umweltschutz sinnvoll eingesetzt werden k|nnen. Die Ergebnisse sind in diesem Band zusammengefa~t.

Environmental information systems (EIS) are concerned with the management of data about the soil, the water, the air, and the species in the world around us. This first textbook on the topic gives a conceptual framework for EIS by structuring the data flow into 4 phases: data capture, storage, analysis, and metadata management. This flow corresponds to a complex aggregation process gradually transforming the incoming raw data into concise documents suitable for high-level decision support. All relevant concepts are covered, including statistical classification, data fusion, uncertainty management, knowledge based systems, GIS, spatial databases, multidimensional access methods, object-oriented databases, simulation models, and Internet-based information management. Several case studies present EIS in practice.

This book presents the refereed proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Constraint Database Systems, CDB '97, held in Delphi, Greece, in January 1997 together with some papers presented at the CP '96 Workshop on Constraints and Databases, held in Cambridge, Massachussetts, in August 1996.The 18 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the volume; also included are the extended abstract of an invited contribution and two survey papers. The papers are organized in sections on languages, expressiveness of spatial languages, systems, temporal applications, new applications, indexing, constraint programming, and optimization.

Dienstbasierte Architekturen bilden zunehmend eine attraktive Ergänzung zu den klassischen Geschäftsmodellen der Softwarenutzung. Das Buch erläutert die für webbasierte Dienste relevanten technischen und ökonomischen Konzepte. Anschließend werden unter Zuhilfenahme von empirischen Analysen und Experimenten aktuelle Markttrends und Marktprozesse beschrieben. Dabei gehen die Autoren auch auf die aus dem Konsumgüterbereich bekannten Vertrauensprobleme und Informationsasymmetrien ein und erörtern deren Konsequenzen für den Entwurf von erfolgreichen Geschäftsmodellen und Märkten. Einschlägige Fallstudien ergänzen die Darstellung.
