Die vorgestellte Arbeit befasst sich mit der Sprechmelodie des (Standard-)Deutschen und untersucht drei zentrale sprechmelodische Einheiten, die zusammen mit betonten Wörtern auftreten. Sie erforscht, wie genau die drei sprechmelodischen Einheiten signalisiert werden. Dafür wurde zunächst eine umfassende Serie von 20 Hörexperimenten durchgeführt, die zeigen, dass sehr viel mehr Eigenschaften des Tonhöhenverlaufs an der Identifikation der Einheiten mitwirken als bislang gedacht. Es wird ein theoretischer Ansatz dazu entwickelt, wie Sprechmelodie beim Hörer entsteht und welche Mechanismen und Größen daran beteiligt sind. In diesen theoretischen Rahmen werden die aufgezeigten Variablen eingebracht und so Signalisierungsprofile für jede der drei sprechmelodischen Einheiten gebildet. Damit liefert die Arbeit fundamentale phonetische und phonologische Erkenntnisse, die für die Modellierung der Sprechmelodie für maschinengenerierte Sprache ebenso bedeutsam sind wie für den Sprechunterricht und wahrnehmungspsychologische Forschungen.

The volume represents a state-of-the-art snapshot of the research on prosody for phoneticians, linguists and speech technologists. It covers well-known models and languages. How are prosodies linked to speech sounds? What are the relations between prosody and grammar? What does speech perception tell us about prosody, particularly about the constituting elements of intonation and rhythm? The papers of the volume address questions like these with a special focus on how the notion of context-based coding, the knowledge of prosodic functions and the communicative embedding of prosodic elements can advance our understanding of prosody.

Phonetically reduced forms are plentiful, theoretically interesting, and a key challenge for automatic speech recognition systems. Yet canonical forms are still central to models of production and perception. Drawing from different fields and diverse languages, this volume brings new insights to the debate on abstractions and canonical forms in linguistics: their psychological reality, descriptive adequacy, and technical implementability.
