The Community of the Cross of Nails came into being as a result of the bombing of Coventry Cathedral in November 1940. Amid the destruction, two medieval nails were found lying in the shape of a cross – seen as a prophetic sign for the need of forgiveness and reconciliation, the people of Coventry offered forgiveness to the people of Germany at Christmas, just weeks after the bombing. Today, the Community of the Cross of Nails has 160 centres in 40 countries, working and praying to build peace, heal the wounds of history and enable people to grow together in hope through conferences, teaching in schools and prisons, and pilgrimages. This illustrated book tells its remarkable story from the beginning. It is also a work of contextual theology, offering reflection on the meaning of reconciliation in the contemporary world and relating experiences of imaginative forgiveness from Cape Town to Ground Zero. Published as part of Coventry Cathedral’s golden jubilee celebrations, this celebrates its continuing ministry of reconciliation.

Faithfulness to Tradition and Change within Roman-Catholic Theology and Church]These proceedings offer the results of the conference "Reform in Catholicism" – organized by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany and the Evangelische Akademie Tutzing. In a first part, the fundamental questions are raised how continuity and innovation are balanced in the Roman Catholic Church, which forms and instances of dealing with discontinuity it has developed, and how it tries to interconnect change and loyalty to tradition. These issues are illuminated from a Catholic and Protestant perspective. In a second part, the question of transformation processes is further deepened by selected case studies.

Week for week preachers are faced with the task of helping their listeners to read the Bible with its wide range of different texts. The so-called dualities of law and gospel, faith and works, old and new covenant, promise and fulfilment are a key to understanding these texts. They have long been taken in the Lutheran churches as an aid to understanding the Bible. However, they have often been misunderstood and in particular used as criticism of Jewish theology. This manual deals openly with this history of interpretation. It encourages a contemporary and critical approach to the dualities by describing their different theological backgrounds and illuminating their significance for the present. It explains how the dualities can encourage a lively preaching culture that combines theological understanding of the Bible with an interpretation that is suitable for the contemporary situation. The book was written in the context of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany and supplemented by a preface for the English-language edition.

Was heißt »Lehre« in den lutherischen Kirchen? Abschließende Thesen erschließen die Relevanz lutherischer Lehrverantwortung für die ökumenischen Dialoge.[Doctrinal Responsibility – a Lutheran Perspective]What does »doctrine« mean in Lutheran churches? What is it based upon? How is it made binding? What instances and processes of doctrinal judgment have developed? Who can decide doctrinal questions and how? This study first presents current structures of doctrinal understanding in German Lutheranism and unfolds exemplary historical case studies of Lutheran doctrinal responsibility (Bultmann controversy; ordination of women; apartheid; doctrine of justification). A second part outlines the emergence of Lutheran doctrinal and confessional norms in the 16th century and traces the development of concepts of ecclesial doctrinal commitment in a historical cross-section up to the present. Concluding theses explore the relevance of Lutheran doctrinal responsibility for ecumenical dialogues.
