This book is a commemorative edition of the 260th anniversary of the Lisbon Accounting and Business School (ISCAL), one of the oldest business schools in Europe. The book collects a series of contributions from teachers and researchers of ISCAL, offering a state-of-the-art picture of the research conducted in this higher education institution. This is an institution oriented to applied teaching and applied science, and the various contributions in this collective work intend to highlight such reality. Contributions range from accounting and finance to law, business and management. A substantial part of the book is dedicated to economic and business simulations; this is an area of special interest and focus to ISCAL, since practical teaching through simulation games and simulation exercises is a vital part of the institution’s mission. The work is constituted by nine chapters organized into four parts: Part I - On Applied Business Research: Thoughts on Accounting, Finance, Business, and Law; Part II - Simulation Studies: Evaluation of Classroom Experiences; Part III - Simulation Studies: Projecting Pedagogy into Perspective; and Part IV - Simulation Models and Theory. Overall, the book reaches most of the areas of applied business research, offering valuable contributions to be used by researchers and teachers.

This textbook introduces readers to essential tools, techniques and methods for intertemporal and strategic modeling in economics. It presents a variety of analytical models covering both dynamic processes and strategic interaction. Students will learn the basic mechanisms associated with the intertemporal approach, on the one hand, and game theory, i.e., the strategic approach, on the other. In addition, a wide range of applications are explored, including growth models, labor markets, international trade, and individual decision-making. Intended for upper undergraduate and graduate students in economics and related fields with a background in mathematics and calculus, this textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to economic modeling and its applications. By avoiding excessive formalism and exploring straightforward examples and applications, it is optimally suited for graduate courses in economics and finance.

This book presents a comprehensive model that simulates human behavior in society, meticulously selecting and analyzing fundamental determinants such as skills and productivity, connectivity and network formation, psychological biases, moral behavior, consumption preferences, institutional arrangements, and political choices. Each agent in the model is characterized by a unique profile, and the aggregate outcomes emerge from the interactions of these diverse agents. The model is codified and simulated, and its results are compared with empirical evidence. This work offers an elegant and stylized approach to understanding complex outcomes resulting from simple interaction rules, making a significant contribution to the literature on complexity and agent-based computational economics.
