The city was the fundamental social institution of Greek and Roman culture. More than the sack of Rome, the abandonment of provincial towns throughout the Mediterranean world in late antiquity (fourth-seventh centuries A.D.) marks the beginning of the Middle Ages. This volume examines archaeological evidence for this last phase of urban life in Asia Minor, one of the Roman empire's most prosperous regions. Based on the proceedings of a symposium co-sponsored by the University of Michigan and the German Archaeological Institute, it brings together studies by an international group of scholars on topics ranging from the public sculpture of Constantinople to the depopulation of the Anatolian countryside in early Byzantine times.

Die Kenntnis der griechischen und römischen Antike, wie aller vergangenen Gesellschaften, ist in entscheidendem Maß von den Medien geprägt, in denen sich die jeweiligen Gesellschaften artikulieren. Die Gesetze, Konventionen und Konzepte der verschiedenen schriftlichen, bildlichen und materiellen Medien führen zu unterschiedlichen Konstruktionen geschichtlicher Wirklichkeiten. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes gehen den spezifischen Formen nach, in denen die griechische und römische Antike sich in Literatur und Inschriften, Bildwerken, Monumenten und Artefakten, Lebensräumen und Ritualen präsentiert. Für den Historiker stellt sich damit die Frage, wie die verschiedenen Konzepte der medialen Konstruktion von Wirklichkeiten zu einem Konzept von ‚Geschichte‛ zusammengeführt werden können. Darüber hinaus ergeben sich Reflexionen über die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Medien und Formen, in denen historische Forschung ihre Dokumentationen und Untersuchungen betreibt und vorlegt.

The need for a "new" book on Greek colonization arose to analyse this phenomenon as a long-term process in a wide geographic area. The events related to individual cities and regions, although geographically very distant from each other, are linked through an articulated network of material and immaterial relations and have to be considered as part of a broader mobility process in a Mediterranean perspective. The intention of "Comparing Greek Colonies" is to bring geographically and culturally distant regions such as Southern Italy/Sicily and the Black Sea, closer together, not merely to find "similarities and differences", but to broaden the scholars’ perspective and overcome existing, generalizing, and biased models, that are often rooted in local scientific traditions.

The proceedings of the international conference "Comparing Greek Colonies. Mobility and Settlement Consolidation from Southern Italy to the Black Sea (8th – 6th century BC)", 7.–9.11.2018 in Rome, are structured around three core topics (economic system; relationships with the indigenous populations; social and territorial systems) that constitute the cornerstones of the political formation of the polis in the Archaic period and for its development during the Classical and Hellenistic Ages.
